EAN-128 Barcode Symbology Introduction
GS1-128/EAN-128 (a.k.a. EAN-128, UCC-128, USS-128, UCC.EAN-128 and GTIN-128) is developed to provide a worldwide format and standard for exchanging common data between companies. It is a variable-length linear barcode with high density.
GS1-128 Character Set Encoding in Word
We provide detailed instructions for encoding GS1-compliant data, configuring character sets, and managing symbol structure. GS1-128 is a standardized linear barcode based on Code 128, specifically designed for supply chain identification.

What is GS1-128 Barcode Data Encoding?

The GS1-128 barcode data message consists of structured groups. Each group contains a GS1 Application Identifier (AI), which is a standardized code that defines the type of data, and its corresponding data value. All characters used in AI codes and data fields comply with the GS1 subset of ISO/IEC 646.

GS1-128 encoding characters

  • The GS1 subset of International Standard ISO/IEC 646
  • Four non-data function characters. FNC2 and FNC4 are not used in GS1-128 barcodes.
  • Four code set selection characters (including single character code set shift).
  • Three start characters.
  • One stop character.
Using GS1-128 generator Word add-in, you need input the characters from ISO/IEC 646 character set only. The barcode generator software will encode the other function characters, code set switch characters, start and stop characters for you at the right positions in GS1-128 symbolgoy in Word document.

GS1-128 Barcode Minimum and Maximum Data Length

A valid GS1-128 barcode must contain at least one AI-data group. It is the minimum requirement for a scannable GS1-128 symbol.

For a single GS1-128 symbol in the Microsoft Office Word Application, the maximum total data character count is 48.

Note: Exceeding the 48-character limit will generate an invalid barcode in the Word document and cause scanning failure. It is recommended to check your data length before generating the barcode.

GS1-128 symbol check digit in Word

Every GS1-128 barcode includes one mandatory check digit for data validation. This check digit is embedded in the barcode symbol but not shown in the HRI (Human Readable Interpretation) text. The text that appears below the barcode. In the Microsoft Office Word Application's barcode settings panel, the "Add checksum char" option does not apply to GS1-128.

The GS1-128/EAN-128 check digit SHALL be included as the last symbol character before the stop character.

The GS1-128 checksum digit SHALL NOT be transmitted by the GS1 128 decoder.

Using GS1-128 generator Word add-in, you do not need worry about how to calculate the check sum character and how to encode and insert it in the GS1-128 barcode right position. The Word barcode generator software will do all the jobs for you.
How to Add An EAN-128 Barcode in Word
Users can refer to the following steps to generate a professional EAN-128 barcode image in Microsoft Office Word.
  1. Start with a new Word document and go to "Add-Ins" tab.
  2. Click "Insert Barcode" to activate a barcode setting panel on the right.
  3. In "SYMBOLOGY" pull-down menu, select "EAN128".
  4. Type valid EAN-128 barcode data in "VALID DATA".
  5. Modify the EAN-128 barcode properties, like barcode width, font, etc.
  6. Click "Insert" and an EAN-128 barcode is created on the document.
  7. The created barcodes can also be updated by clicking "Update".

GS1-128 GS1 Data Message Encoding in Microsoft Office Word Application

A GS1 data message includes one or more element strings. Each element string combines a GS1 Application Identifier (AI) and its associated data field. This structure ensures consistent data identification across the supply chain.

Example GS1 Data String

A sample GS1 data string is: (01)99012345678909(15)241015(21)abc

This sample contains three element strings, each with an AI and corresponding data:
  • 01 - GTIN (Global Trade Item Number): A fixed 14-digit code used for product identification.
  • 15 - Best Before Date: A fixed 6-digit date in YYMMDD format (for example, 241015 = October 15, 2024).
  • 21 - Serial Number: A variable-length alphanumeric value (1 - 20 characters) used for unique item identification.

Print GS1-128 Barcode in Word Document

  • Open the "Barcode Settings" pane in the Microsoft Office Word Application (accessible via the "Add-Ins" tab > "Create Barcode").
  • Locate the "Data" property field in the "Barcode Settings" panel. This is where you will input your GS1 data string.
  • Enter the full GS1 data string with AI codes enclosed in parentheses (follow the format of the sample provided).
  • The add-in will automatically parse the AI structure correctly and generate a valid, scannable GS1-128 barcode in the active Word document.
Note: Incorrect parenthesis formatting (e.g., missing or misplaced parentheses) or invalid AI lengths will result in encoding errors in the Word output. Always double-check the AI format and data length before generating the barcode to ensure it is scannable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between Code 128 and GS1-128?

GS1-128 is the standardized version of Code 128 mandated by the GS1 system. It encodes only part of Code 128's total encoding characters, utilizing only a portion of the full Code 128 specification.

What's the distinction between GS1-128 and GTIN-14?

Both encode GS1 business data. GS1-128 handles multiple GS1 application IDs and their associated data (such as serial numbers, prices, production dates), while GTIN-14 (ITF-14) only stores the 14-digit GTIN, GTIN-14 (ITF-14) is the product's SKU barcode on a case, used purely for identification.

What content does a GS1-128 barcode have?

A GS1-128 barcode can hold 48 characters of data at most. GS1-128 can contain information like serial numbers, manufacture/expiry dates, weight, and price, within a 48-character limit.

What's the minimum and maximum size requirement for GS1-128 barcodes?

For a GS1-128 barcode, the X-dimension (narrowest bar or space) has a minimum width of 0.495 mm and the maximum width allowed for the X-dimension is 1.016 mm.

Does GS1-128 have a function code, and if so, which one?

In GS1-128, the FNC1 character serves as the primary function code and is positioned directly after the start character.
