Mapped Folders A mapped folder in a Visual Studio SharePoint project is a construct that allows deploying files from the Visual Studio project to folders that are under the SharePoint hive (eg, Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\14) There are two ways you can add a mapped folder to the SharePoint project: adding a predefined mapped folder, such as Images and Layouts or using the SharePoint Mapped Folder dialog To add a predefined mapped folder you can right click the project name and select the Add menu The context menu shown Figure 11-8 opens and you can click either SharePoint Images Mapped Folder or SharePoint Layouts Mapped Folder to add a mapped folder to the Images or Layouts folder in the SharePoint hive Images and Layouts are available in this predefined way because they are used so commonly in SharePoint development

Each mapped folder that gets added to the project is represented with the mapped folder icon Under a particular mapped folder (eg, Images) a new folder is always created with a name matching the project name Now that we have an Images mapped folder we can right click on the project name folder under the Images mapped folder and select Add > Existing item In the Add Existing Item dialog, select the image, and click the Add button to add it to the mapped folder By default the Deployment Type of any file you add to a mapped folder is set to TemplateFile This means that files added to mapped folders are not part of any feature, but deployed with the solution itself The entry in Manifestxml for a file deployed through the mapped folder is specified with the XML element TemplateFile For the image we just added to the mapped folder, the Deployment Type for the image is set to TemplateFile, which means the image is going to to be deployed to the SharePoint hive s \TEMPLATE\IMAGES\HiddenFeatureAndImage folder In order to display the image next to the custom link in the Site Actions dialog we need to set the ImageUrl property To do this, we must update the Elementsxml file associated with our custom action with a Description and ImageUrl attribute as shown in Listing 11-10

There is a little surprise here in Listing 11-10 The image we deployed to the SharePoint hive at \TEMPLATE\IMAGES\HiddenFeatureAndImage\ BingLogojpg has the URL http://localhost/_layouts/Images/HiddenFeaturesAndImage/BingLogojpg This is because SharePoint maps the SharePoint hive directory \TEMPLATE\LAYOUTS to http://localhost/_layouts and the SharePoint hive directory \TEMPLATE\IMAGES to http://localhost/ _layouts/images

What we should do next is to use the same image for the feature image So, instead of using the generic feature image on the list of site features as shown in Figure 11-12 we could display our custom image there To get to the site features page, go to the home page of the SharePoint site and drop down the Site Actions menu and select Site Settings from the menu Then, in the Site Settings page, click on the Manage Site Features link in the Site Actions setting as shown in Figure 11-13
