This application of policy is shown in Figure 21-47, with an example of how the user con guration is applied in the three scenarios of normal processing, loopback replace mode processing, and loopback merge mode processing As Figure 21-47 demonstrates, in normal processing, the user receives the policy based on the user s location With loopback replace processing mode, the user receives only the policy that is based on the computer that he is logged on to Finally, with the loopback merge processing mode, the user rst receives the policy based on his location, and then the policy based on the computer s location is applied This means it can overwrite any settings that were set in the computer policy

The capability to apply GPOs to a site, domain, organizational unit, and even the local computer policy is great and granular However, a user or computer object can exist only in one location; although OUs can be nested, there might be times when it s impractical to create a highly complex OU con guration just for a speci c GPO application For example, apply a GPO for any user who has a certain accreditation However, you don t want to have to create a new sub OU anywhere the user exists just to link one policy, or because you want to apply a GPO only to computers that have certain hardware There are two pieces of functionality that enable this more-granular GPO application, but rst a warning These should be used sparingly

they make troubleshooting more complex, and GPO application more resource intensive The rst bit of functionality is the capability to modify the Access Control List (ACL) on a GPO For users to have a GPO applied, they must have read and apply permissions on the GPO By default, the Authenticated Users group has permission to apply Group Policy This includes any user or computer in the domain However, this group can be removed and other groups given those rights, as follows Once again, these permissions are applied to the GPO, not the GPO link, so any changes affect any application of the GPO: 1 Select the GPO in the GPMC This selection can be done via a link of the GPO or directly on the GPO under the GPOs container 2 Select the GPO via a link, and a dialog is displayed with the following text: You have selected a link to a GPO Except for changes to link properties, changes you make here are global to the GPO, and impacts all other locations where this GPO is linked Assuming you read, understand, and remember this warning, you can check the Do Not Show This Message Again option 3 The Details pane shows information about the GPO The Details tab is useful for showing the version numbers for the GPO This is helpful for troubleshooting, along with the unique ID of the GPO Notice that you can also set the GPO status (see Figure 21-48)

Group Policy Management Console (GPMC)
4 The Scope tab contains information related to the GPO (see Figure 21-49) A drop-down shows all the domains in the forest along with site information and, for the selected container, a list of locations where the GPO is linked Also note the WMI Filtering displayed at the bottom The Security Filtering section is used to limit who applies a GPO 5 Select Authenticated Users and select Remove; as with Authenticated Users, include anyone in the domain who has permission to apply the GPO 6 Click the Add button to get access to the normal dialog for the addition of objects, which by default are users and groups However, click the Object Types button to also enable the capability to search for computers Enter the objects to be given access (users, computers, and/or groups) and click OK Click Advanced to search for matches or browse the objects in the domain or location speci ed
