The type of deployment must be selected For the rst domain in the organization, select Create a New Domain in a New Forest (see Figure 1011) However, if this is not the rst domain controller in the organization, select Existing Forest, which opens options to add a domain controller to an existing domain or create a new domain in the existing forest You don t have the option to create a new tree; that option is exposed only during an advanced ADDS installation process

A check on the DNS con guration is performed based on the name of the domain entered (see Figure 10-16) This checks whether a DNS zone exists for the domain name speci ed, and if it does not exist, by default it is created on the domain controller automatically

FIGURE 10-16 Con rming DNS con guration Additional domain controller options can be con gured If this is the rst domain controller in a new forest, it has to be a GC, which is explained later in this chapter If this is the rst domain controller in a new domain, it cannot be an RODC (see Figure 10-17) The domain controller can also be speci ed to host the DNS service (which is mandatory if DNS services were not found for the domain name speci ed and are installed locally) You might also receive a warning if the machine has any dynamically assigned Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (IPv4 or IPv6) The best practice is to have static IP addresses for IPv6 and not just IPv4 If you are using Dynamic Host Con guration Protocol (DHCP) to assign reserved IP addresses, ignore the warning If installing DNS, you might also receive an error that delegation to the zone cannot be performed This is common if you are creating a new second-level domain such as savilltechnet, which is saying the net zone cannot be contacted to delegate savilltech records to this new DNS server You might think, ideally, you would already have delegation records in the top-level domain pointing to this new DNS However, because this is an AD domain that is internal to your network, you don t want its DNS visible to the outside world This is one reason it s a good practice to make your AD a child of your company s DNS (for example, corpsavilltechnet so that corp can be delegated from the main savilltechnet domain) This delegation is also useful for child domains in the AD that can be delegated to hold their own DNS child domain zone The location for the database les is speci ed (see Figure 10-18) 11, Designing and Installing Active Directory, covers best practices concerning their location

Next the Directory Services Restore Mode password is con gured (see Figure 10-19), which is used when the domain controller is rebooted into a special safe mode used to perform certain AD functions such as restorations
FIGURE 10-19 Recovery password for the new domain A summary is displayed that also has the option to export the settings speci ed to a le (see Figure 10-20), which can then be used to perform the domain creation in an unattended fashion At this point, exit the wizard if you want to use the installation wizard to create the unattended answer le The creation of the domain controller begins (see Figure 10-21), which for a new domain in a new forest imports a default schema de nition For a new domain in an existing forest, the schema and con guration partitions are read from the parent domain and the new domain database is created For a domain controller going into an existing domain, all the partitions replicate from a domain controller for the speci ed domain
