Some DSL providers are starting to try and ght the speed advantage of cable by saying their downstream speed is 384 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps. Cable speeds uctuate because cable is a shared medium and more traf c sharing the same bandwidth means slower speeds for all. Yet DSL touts the fact that it isn t a shared service. So where does that extra speed come from Technically, there are ways to make that happen, but the providers aren t upfront about what they re doing. Ask your DSL service provider before you pay extra for the increased download speed option. This could be an improvement from the marketing department rather than engineering. If the price is the same, take the higher speed option, of course, but don t be disappointed if the speed seems more like 384 Kbps than 1.5 Mbps most of the time. Synchronous Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL) service is the symmetrical version of the DSL sold to residential and small business customers. Actually, SDSL is the normal DSL and aDSL is the variation, but you d never know from the information provided by the phone companies. The last three speeds listed in the following chart are called IDSL (ISDN Digital Subscriber Line), which isn t really DSL. ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) is a precursor to DSL from the 80s and uses technology that is a bit different from DSL. Due to prices higher than consumers were willing to bear, ISDN had little market success when it was originally introduced. Typical business DSL speeds (SDSL and IDSL): 1.5 Mbps/384 Kbps 1.1 Mbps/1.1 Mbps 768 Kbps/768 Kbps 384 Kbps/384 Kbps 192 Kbps/192 Kbps 144 Kbps/144 Kbps Even businesses have asymmetrical options. That makes sense, because the impact on your provider varies little if you re a household, SOHO, or (very) small business. Larger businesses tend to host their own Web and e-mail servers and therefore need more upstream bandwidth. The technology behind ISDN, however, makes it more distance tolerant. Users out of the reach of real DSL often choose IDSL to grab the only broadband service they can get. At least the success of DSL and the need to reach farther means the phone companies had to break down and lower the price of ISDN to something the market would bear. The only difference for IDSL users from their aDSL counterparts is the slower IDSL speed and the (usually) higher price. Nothing stops residential customers from ordering SDSL service, and nothing stops small businesses from ordering aDSL service. Let your needs make the decision, not the phone company salesperson trying to tell you they can t sell SDSL to a home. They can, and will, when you talk to a supervisor.

In summary, the U.S. Federal government doesn t seem to know what broadband really is, and what they de ne as broadband lags far behind European and Asian broadband service. In addition, there has been little government protection of consumers rights as FCC rulings routinely favor media corporation over citizen access and Fair Use access to material granted by the Constitution. Perhaps it s not as confusing as all that. Broadband is, essentially, faster Internet access using new digital technologies (for DSL) and a large shared neighborhood bandwidth connection (cable). Nothing bad will happen if you choose the wrong service for your needs. Your service provider will be able to recon gure your connection if you ask. Moving from DSL to cable or vice versa will be a problem if you signed a long-term contract to grab a lower price, but you can always change when your contract expires. When you have the choice, always get more speed. That includes upstream and downstream speed. No one s Internet response is as fast as they wish it were, so choose the fastest connections your budget will allow.
