Understanding and Controlling Exposure

A camera is nothing more than a tool for capturing light. In fact, it is a Latin word that means lightproof chamber. You simply send light into your lightproof chamber to make pictures. You control light by making adjustments to your camera, often referred to as setting the exposure, or make changes to the light by choosing the time of day to shoot, camera angle, background selection, ash use, and so on. As a visual artist, you use light and exposure to control the viewer s experience. Exposure is the amount of light that strikes your image sensor and is controlled by the exposure settings you have dialed in to your camera. Awareness of your subject s positioning or your camera s positioning will lead you to choose locations where you can easily control light by adding it or subtracting it. I often avoid an overly bright sky by moving my subject into soft shade and adjusting my exposure for the lower intensity of light or adding ash that lls in the new shadows caused by the shade. Once you decide on the scene and how to handle the light, the last step is to control the amount of light that will enter the camera, pass through the lens, aperture, and shutter, and nally strike your image sensor and make the image. You do this by setting the two most creative controls the camera possesses: aperture and shutter speed. A third method of controlling light, adjusting the ISO setting, controls how much light the image sensor needs to make a proper exposure. Correct ISO settings can determine how successful you are when shooting subjects like sports or action, close-ups, or landscapes by limiting or expanding the range of aperture and shutter speed settings available for that particular scene.

As the light rays pass into the camera, they travel through an adjustable opening called a diaphragm, or simply, aperture, then the shutter curtain, before striking the image sensor. The pupil in your eye is a type of aperture by opening and closing and controlling the intensity of light that hits your retina. The larger the aperture opening, the more light enters the camera, the smaller the opening, the less light enters. Aperture settings are called f-stops, a number representing a fraction, so a smaller number like f/2 is a wider opening while a larger number like f/16 indicates a smaller opening that lets less light enter the camera. On the PowerShot G11 in Manual mode, you can adjust aperture settings from f/2.8 to f/8 in 1/3-stop increments. The PowerShot G11 allows you to shoot in full Manual control or Aperture Priority (Av) or Shutter Priority (Tv), along with full Program AE. Certain Scene modes offer priority of one control over other exposure controls. See 3 for more on special Scene modes.

Each aperture setting has its own strengths and weaknesses and times for choosing one over the other. Aperture settings determine the amount of depth of eld in your photographs. When you stop down your lens from f/2.8 to f/8, you let in less light but you increase your depth-of- eld range. When you open up your aperture from f/8 to f/2.8, you allow more light to enter the camera but you make the focus plane shallower and create a more out-of-focus background. Always use aperture selection and depth of field to your advantage. To show the most detail, use a high f-number. To soften a busy background like a street TIP scene, use a small f-number.

4.6 Aperture selection controls the amount of depth of eld as evidenced by this sculpture shot. A smaller aperture was used, which renders the background more clearly de ned. Taken at ISO 100, f/8, 1/15 second with a 15.2mm lens setting.
