Control Formatting Before we can dive into the more advanced formatting features, it makes sense to review the basics of control formatting, including control selection If you have used InfoPath before, you may want to skip this section (However, you may still learn something new if you read it) If you are new to InfoPath, read on As we just mentioned, you can select and format text in InfoPath the same way you do in other Of ce applications But how can you format a control so that the text entered by your users is always underlined, for example Well, that s just as easy One way you can do this is by rst selecting the control as you would do for text: Click to the right or left of the control and drag your mouse cursor Then choose the format you want from the Formatting toolbar or Font task pane This is called text selection However, selecting a control using text selection formats not only the control but also the surrounding text If you want to format the control and not the surrounding text, you must use what is aptly named control selection so you are selecting just the control and nothing else The way you select a control depends on the type of control you are trying to select For example, for a simple noncontainer control, such as a Text Box, you can select the control by simply clicking on it The square boxes that appear at the corners and sides of the control, as shown in Figure 249, tell you that the control is selected These square boxes, called grab handles, can also be used to resize the control Click on one of them and then drag the control to the desired height and width

the small square box at the upper-left corner of the table (refer back to Figure 27) Whether you use text selection or control selection, once you have selected the control, you can usually format it exactly as you would text However, a couple of controls behave differently, which, at rst, may catch you off-guard When you select a Rich Text Box control, for example, none of the standard font styles (eg, bold, italic, underline) are available This is because the Rich Text Box can contain formatted text If you could specify bold text for the Rich Text Box control, for example, users of your form would not be able to add text that was not bold Other controls, such as the Picture and Ink Picture, may support only some formatting or none at all, depending on the type of data they are associated with Some other controls, such as ActiveX controls (which we ll talk about in 19), may not support formatting at all

Format Painter Now that we ve reviewed the basics of formatting, let s talk about a few InfoPath features that make your life easier when it comes to formatting text or controls The rst is the Format Painter If you are an avid Word user, you are familiar with this tool This feature gives you a way to copy the formatting of text or a control in the form template to other text or controls The Format Painter, in fact, isn t limited to design mode If you include a Rich Text Box control in your form, users can use the Format Painter when lling out that part of the form The Format Painter is available on the Standard toolbar and looks like a paintbrush (Figure 250) To use it, select the text or control whose formatting you want to copy (or, for text, simply place your cursor within the formatted text), and then click on the paintbrush toolbar button The cursor changes to a paintbrush (Figure 251) to indicate that InfoPath is currently in Format Painter mode Next, just select the text or control to which you want to copy the formatting The formatting that was present on the text or control you originally selected is copied to the new text or control
