for blades outside of the telco space is developed, the open specification for BladeCenter is the only open specification that exists. was launched in February 2006 as a collaborative developer community focused on accelerating the development of blade solutions. By June 2006, it had more than 75 members, ranging from hardware and component providers to application developers and distribution partners. The program has had significant success, with a large number of integrated horizontal and vertical solutions being delivered. Examples of BladeCenter products and initiatives include the Virtualized Hosted Client Infrastructure, where IBM, VMware, and Citrix collaborated to deliver a hosted client offering with full desktop functionality, and Systems Solutions for Branch Banking, a solution for financial services and banking customers. Much of the information presented here is from a cross-industry effort to share information about standards between various standards-setting organizations. Such information is maintained online in shared forums (on wikis that allows visitors to edit the content, such as Wikipedia) to allow it to be updated constantly by various representatives and experts participating in these organizations. This collaborative process was started within the Global Grid Forum by the working group known as the Standards Development Organization Collaboration on Networked Resources Management (SCRM-WG at as a repository of relevant standards. This effort includes work by leading industry bodies including the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF), Global Grid Forum (GGF), the TeleManagement Forum (TMF), the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), the International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T), the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), the Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA), and the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). Many of these are discussed on the following pages.

The DMTF Common Information Model (CIM) infrastructure defines a standardized approach to the management of systems and networks, based on an object-oriented paradigm. The CIM schema is a conceptual information model for describing computing and business entities in Internet, enterprise, and service-provider environments. CIM provides a consistent definition and structure of data. CIM has been adopted in varying degrees by most systems and network vendors, allowing systems and network elements to be managed by any management software product that supports CIM.

The Open Grid Forum (OGF) was created in 2006 from a merger of the Global Grid Forum (GGF) and the Enterprise Grid Alliance (EGA) to bring the entire grid community together. OGF will focus on accelerating the adoption of grid technology. Prior to the merger, the GGF had established a community of users, developers, and vendors leading the global standardization effort for grid computing. The GGF community included thousands of individuals in industry and research, representing more than 400 organizations in more than 50 countries. GGF s focus was primarily on the grid requirements of IT vendors, and the EGA s emphasis was on meeting the needs of enterprise users. The combined OGF will also focus on such things as how grids integrate with virtualization, SOAs (service-oriented architectures), and automated systems. OGF hopes to help overcome obstacles to adopting grid computing by including issues involving people, processes, and technology. Information about OGF s standards and activities can be found at
