The most readily recognizable pulses are those that happen at the pace of natural human motion. A typical heart rate at rest is between 70 and 75 beats per minute (bpm), and a typical walking pace is a bit faster. Beats occur in similar human-scale time intervals. This pace is known as the tempo, and is also measured in bpm.

Beats are typically arranged in groups of two, three, and four, with the majority of current popular music being in the four-beat group. The grouping of beats into patterns is called meter, and a single group of beats is called a measure, or sometimes a bar. Often there is a pattern of stressed beats, called accents, or changes of pitch, harmony, and tone that can also help to give different beats different prominence. You can count along with most songs, and if the measures have four beats, you will be able to count one two three four, one two three four fairly easily. The one is called the downbeat. In much of popular music, there is a snare drum or hand clap on beats two and four, while a kick will often occur on beat one. When mashing up songs, it will be important to correctly identify the downbeat, or your music will likely have a disturbing offset. A note that lasts for a single beat is usually called a quarter note, because there are four beats per measure in the most common meter. A note that lasts for two beats is called a half note, and a note that lasts for four beats is a whole note. There are also durations of less than a beat: A half of a beat is called an eighth note, and a quarter beat is called a sixteenth note. Thirty-second and sixty-fourth notes are not unheard of, but are rare in popular music. If a note is dotted, it takes on a value of one and a half times its normal value. So a dotted quarter note would last for one and a half beats, while a dotted half note would last for three beats.

The most common meter of four beats per measure is commonly referred to as 4/4 (pronounced four four ), referring to the fact that there are four quarter notes per measure. A meter of three quarter notes per measure would be written as 3/4 ( three four ). When a meter is defined, the brain actually performs an internal rhythm following the beats as they are grouped together. Actual sounds do not have to occur on beats for the pattern to become discernable. Some beats in a rhythm are silent and implied, but they are still felt by the listener. The human mind has a predilection to perceive these grids even with incomplete information, filling in the blanks mentally. In fact, if you hear a series of unaccented uniform beats, you will likely start to organize them into a meter inside your own head without even trying. A musical rhythm is built on top of this metrical grid. When you look at a waveform, you can often see the drums draw out the grid visually. Notice the regular spikes in the waveform in Figure 4-6.

The beats are labeled for you. In this case, there is a kick on every beat, as well as an extra kick between beats three and four. Because beats are spaced at regular intervals, you know that this extra spike in the wave is not a beat, but rather a sound made halfway through the beat. You can also see the little hi-hat spike halfway through beats one, two, and four, neatly dividing each beat in half. Notice the denser lines at the beginning of beats two and four. This is the snare, performing its most typical rhythmic pattern.

In most real-world examples, the waveforms may look more complicated, but with a little practice, you will be able to both hear and see the beats. In mashup construction, the tempos and meters of the component tracks will be manipulated until they are identical, and the underlying grids of the tracks will line up, with the emphases of both tracks occurring simultaneously in parallel. The end result is that the two rhythmic grids merge into a single rhythm.
