probabilistic channels with states. A general transmission feedback model with CSIT and CSIR is introduced. We have discussed ideal CSI scenarios where various combinations of CSIT and CSIR con gurations are considered. For example, we illustrate four special cases of no CSIT and no CSIR, perfect CSIT and no CSIT, perfect CSIR and no CSIT, and perfect CSIT and perfect CSIR. Figure 2.19 illustrates a summary of various channel capacities in fading channels. For fast fading channels, we see that full knowledge of CSI at the transmitter and the receiver could both enhance the channel capacity. When CSIR is present, channelmatched decoding can be done at the receiver, and this contributes to the capacity gain over that without CSIR. However, asymptotically in the limit of large block length (L), the capacity of channel with no CSIR approaches the channel capacity with perfect CSIR because perfect CSIR can be obtained with negligible overhead of embedding pilot symbols. When there is perfect CSIT, adaptation can be performed at the transmitter, and this contributes to the capacity gain. For a single-antenna link, the transmitter adaptation involves power water lling across the temporal domain. For multiple antenna link, the optimal adaptation strategy is temporal and involves spatial power water lling where the transmitter distributes the transmitted power across the spatial channels and temporal symbols. increases the transmit power when the channel condition is good and reduces the transmit power (or even shuts down the transmission) when the channel condition is poor. No variable rate adaptation is needed to realize the ergodic capacity of fast fading channels with CSIT. On the other hand, for slow fading channels, the channel capacity (without CSIT) is itself a random variable and has to be speci ed by the cdf (instead of a single capacity number). For the same reason, the capacity of slow fading channels with CSIR is larger than that without CSIR at the same outage probability. However, for MIMO channels with a large number of transmit antennas, there is a channel hardening effect, which the outage capacity with CSIR converges to a deterministic value (ergodic capacity). In other words, there will be no packet outage as long as the information rate is less than the ergodic capacity even for slow fading channels with CSIR only. When there is CSIT, adaptation at the transmitter can improve the link performance. Unlike the fast fading case in which only power adaptation is done, the transmitter has to perform both power and rate adaptation for slow fading channels to eliminate packet outage.
