RSS feeds are really useful not only for subscribing to updates using a feed reader, but also for displaying content from partners or other projects you may be publishing online. You re probably already acquainted with the RSS feed widget that ships with WordPress; it can display a bunch of updates from just about any working RSS feed. When you want to work with feeds on your site you re not limited to just that widget, or even any of the available plugins. You can, in fact, tap into the feed parser directly and hence do more custom stuff with the output from the feed. If you want to output the description you can do so, just as you can add HTML code around the various elements to get more control, and so on. If you want to do more advanced stuff with content from an RSS feed you re more or less required to either rely on a plugin, or code it yourself thanks to the built-in functionality. Which, incidentally, often is what the plugin you may be considering relies on in the first place! One thing worth thinking about, however, is that displaying RSS feeds can slow your site down. If you re fetching the latest updates from several sites (or even just one) you ll find that your site

sometimes lags behind. That s because the feed is being queried from your server, to the feed host s server, and then PHP needs to get all the data and parse it to be able to produce the output you want. This is true for hardcoded RSS fetching as well as if you were putting a ton of RSS widgets on your site. If you rely on a lot of feed content you should look into caching solutions to make your site as snappy as possible. In fact, ideally you d let the server run a cronjob at regular intervals and cache the content for you to output whenever needed. There is some support for caching, but you re on your own when it comes to scheduling the content fetching. Most likely that would mean that you would have to develop your own plugin, or find one that does this already. So, yeah, feeds are great and really useful, but if you browse the blogosphere (in particular) and pay close attention to what it is that slows down sites, you ll find that feed fetching is one of the culprits, along with other functionality that nabs content (be it badges or ads) from external services. All I m saying is make sure your site isn t too bogged down by RSS feed content.

There is built-in support for outputting RSS feed content on your site. You can use the feed widget (covered a bit later), but most likely you want more control than that. Luckily this is pretty easy to achieve, thanks to the addition of SimplePie in the core. That s right, there s a new feed parser in WordPress as of 2.8, which means that although your old wp_rss() calls may still work, they are outdated and should be changed to something more up-to-date. 264 Which is to say, you need to use fetch_feed() instead, something that may seem a bit daunting when delving into the SimplePie documentation at first. However, it isn t that complicated after all. Here s a simple inclusion of the latest headlines, linked, from my lifestream over at stream.tdh.me:

By including the feed like this, I m opening it up for SimplePie functions. I m basically looping the feed here and printing it, fetching the data as I go along. In this case, I m just pulling the permalink and the title of every post. You can expand on that by adding the description and a date:
