220 Figure 10-6: Thumbnail view Say you want to add a short description to each photo set (again, that s a post) and list the whole thing with the thumbnail to the left, and the description to the right. The example below makes the thumbnail clickable, as well as the title, which is shown above the description. The code even includes the tags, since I like tagging. The code resides in the same template as the previous example, so the altered code within the loop is shown here:

In this code, you re outputting the thumbnail in the same way as you did before. You re also getting the_title() and linking it, and the description is fetched using the_excerpt(), which means that you can offer that to people subscribing to a Gallery RSS feed, for example. This solution, illustrated in Figure 10-7, gives a better overview than just spitting out a thumbnail in a grid on a per-photoset basis.

Each post is a photoset in this setup, containing all the images displayed in thumbnail gallery view using the [gallery] shortcode. Since images uploaded to a particular post are treated as attachments, that means you can browse to the attachment page (if you choose to link from the [gallery] shortcode output that way) and see the individual image, with a permalink and all. You will probably have to style the single post view to properly fit your photosets. There are several ways to do this, and perhaps the post_class() output will be enough. If you want to output, say, the_excerpt() under the gallery you would have to add that, of course. This can easily be done by adding a conditional tag that checks if it is that particular category, and if it returns true it will output the_excerpt(), otherwise it won t.

You can also add a template file for attachments (attachment.php, or image.php if you want to dig down deep) and style that accordingly. That would make it a lot easier to add back and forth links, as well as a link back to the original photoset. This is elaborated in 14, so consult that for more on working with actual images. 222 Another thing to consider is whether or not each image should offer the commenting functionality. Since each attachment is really a post with a different classification, this works. It also means that numerous plugins will work, including grading plugins, so why not let people add a grade to your images There are a lot of possibilities here. One of those possibilities is to bypass the attachment page entirely, by using an alternate way of displaying images. This usually means a lightbox effect. That too is discussed in 14, so turn there, and to 11 for plugins that help you implement the display technique. No matter how you decide to display the photosets and the actual photos, you re probably wise to style them a little bit differently than any ordinary posts you may have. It is always a good thing when the visitor knows where they are on a site.
