Some classification of data is necessary, but complex classification schemes may not be worth the effort or expense. Safeguarding those data elements and documents that are intended to be protected is where the major focus and allocation of resources should be. The next few pages explore a simple three-level data classification scheme that easily fits in currently available and on-the-horizon security technologies. In some cases, this statute prevents requiring members of the public to identify themselves to gain access to the information. Companies and other organizations often possess information that they either want or are legally required to make available to the general public. By posting that data on the Web, they can concentrate their security measures on the categories of protected and restricted information. Requesting even an e-mail address before granting access to the public data puts up at least a mental barrier to the person who s merely seeking information. Information to which the public is entitled or that you would want to get in front of prospects or clients should be made easy to find and access. Writing data to this category does require access controls, but would use at least the protection controls discussed later for posting to public information sources.
