When data is replicated to a remote site, that simply means that the data is there, but for most situations, the data alone is not sufficient. If replication is done properly, then the application executables and configuration files are there as well. But even that does not ensure that the applications will start themselves automatically during a disaster recovery. In order for applications to automatically start themselves at the DR site, some additional software is required that can do the following: 1. Figure out that the main site has gone away. 2. Tell the replication software to promote the DR site, making it the new replication master. 3. Automatically bring the key resources online. 4. Start the critical applications at the DR site. It is important that any software that might make these decisions for you require some sort of minor human intervention. It would be inappropriate for software to make the decision to migrate operations to your DR site all by itself. In the unlikely event that the software mistakenly decides that a site-tosite failover is required, the result will be a very expensive error, as well as unplanned and planned (as you move operations back) episodes of downtime. Remote application failover can reduce recovery time after a disaster, especially if your DR site is normally unmanned. Applications will begin to come back online in minutes, regardless of how long it might take for system administrative staff to physically reach the DR site. Another important aspect of remote application failover is in the networking. Most of the time, the DR site is on a different subnet than is the primary site. Even if applications are brought up on the remote side, client systems on the Internet or at other company facilities will not be able to find them if they are on different subnets. Any application that you use to failover applications to a new subnet must be able to tell clients of the change. Later releases of the Domain Name Service (DNS) allow you to create an alternate list of IP addresses that it knows about but does not make active until it receives a signal from another application. This feature is a very important one to make sure that automated failover to a remote site can be successful. VERITAS and Legato both have applications that can automate remote application failover, as do some of the system vendors.

When you are evaluating replication tools, you have many choices. Before you start, understand all the choices so that you can make the right decision the first time. If the two replication sites can be on the same SAN, that is the best approach. To maximize data integrity, but with the greatest impact on performance, use synchronous replication. To minimize the impact on performance, but with a reduction in data integrity, use asynchronous replication. Software-based replication is often more flexible, faster, and less expensive than the more prevalent hardware-based replication.

As systems have become larger in terms of memory, CPU, and I/O channel counts, there has been a corresponding trend to subdivide these big boxes into smaller, more flexible units for management. Each of these subdivisions looks and feels like a standalone system, but because they re carved from a larger box, they are virtual machines. Virtual machines (VMs) are not a new technology. They go back to the earliest days of mainframe computing. In fact, the VM in the name of IBM s old mainframe operating system stood for Virtual Machines. After falling into disrepute for many years, painted with the mainframe brush, virtual machines have begun to make a comeback. From an availability perspective, we re near the top of the Availability Index, at Level 9 as shown in Figure 19.1. Your availability return on investment is lower than for more fundamental redundancy planning such as backups and clustering, but virtualization and resource management will yield availability improvements in terms of predictability.
