The SwingComboBox class enables you to present a list of items to the user, from which one can be chosen It is similar to SwingList, except that it occupies less space because the list of possible items is visible only when the user opens it to change the selection, and because it is possible to configure it so that the user can select a value that is not in the item listThe variables of the SwingComboBox class are listed in Table 24-9

Each item in the items list is of type SwingComboBoxItem, which has the same variables as the SwingListItem class discussed earlier in this chapter and which are listed in Table 24-7 The behavior of an editable SwingComboBox differs slightly from one that is not editable For the sake of simplicity, we ll look first at an example of one that is not editable and then cover the changes in behavior that occur when you make the control editable
Using a Noneditable SwingComboBox
Using a noneditable combo box is almost the same using a list, as the following code shows:

This code creates a noneditable combo box containing 100 selectable items, each represented by a SwingComboBoxItem object If you run this code, which you ll find in the file javafxswing/SwingComboBox1fx and open the list of available items by clicking the combo box arrow, you ll get the result shown in Figure 24-14 If you select an item by clicking it with the mouse, it appears in the combo box itself and the drop-down closesAt the same time, the selectedIndex and selectedItem variables change the value to reflect, respectively, the index of the selected item in the items list and its SwingComboBoxItem value In addition to this, the text variable is assigned the text for the selected item, as obtained from its SwingComboBoxItem objectWhen there is no selection, the visible part of the combo box is empty, and these variables have the value -1, null, and an empty string, respectivelyApart from its visual appearance, a noneditable SwingComboBox behaves in almost the same way as the SwingList class discussed earlier in this chapter
