Consider an environment consisting of a mixture of UNIX and Windows servers Each server maintains its own security databases, which means users have one account for UNIX access and one account for Windows access Multiple accounts mean multiple passwords This type of heterogeneous environment is an issue from a password management perspective, but with password synchronization, you can enable synchronization between UNIX NIS domain account passwords and the users accounts in the Windows Server 2008 AD This synchronization is bidirectional; it requires you to install the password synchronization component on all domain controllers in the domain Password synchronization is granular, and individual user accounts can be excluded or included The process works by having a component installed on both the UNIX and Windows Server side If a password is changed on the UNIX side, the UNIX password module calls a Pluggable Authentication Module (PAM) PAM intercepts the password change request, encrypts the password with strong encryption (Triple DES), and then sends the password to the AD domain controller running IdMU This controller decrypts the encrypted password and applies the updated password to the AD account In fact, you can also use password synchronization to synchronize to local user accounts on a normal Windows server and not a domain controller As part of the password synchronization component, PAMs are available for HP-UX 11i, Sun Solaris 7 and 8, IBM AIX 5L 52, and Red Hat Linux 8 and 9 Use them to perform synchronization to AD The source code also is available, so if you are running a different version of UNIX or Linux, you can compile the PAM onto any version If a password is changed on the Windows side, the Password Synchronization Service intercepts the password change, encrypts the password using strong encryption, and transmits the encrypted password to the Single Sign on Daemon (SSOD) running in the background on the UNIX side SSOD then decrypts the password and applies it to the UNIX user database Once again, SSOD is supplied for the four major UNIX/Linux versions, plus the source code is installed This allows the SSOD to run on any UNIX/Linux implementation SSOD can be downloaded from Microsoftcom as ssodtargz for Windows Server 2008 (Search Microsoftcom for ssodtargz) These password synchronization components are seen in action in Figure 23-13
