This chapter has discussed creating, linking, and seeing values of GPOs and delegating who can do what with a GPO The next big item is being able to see the resultant set of policies a user or computer receives, based on all the GPOs that might be linked to a site, domain, and OU At the bottom of the GPMC navigation window is a Group Policy Results option that is used to perform this RSOP calculation The easiest way to understand it is to use it: 1 Right-click Group Policy Results and select Group Policy Results Wizard from the context menu (see Figure 21-72)

2 The Welcome to Group Policy Results Wizard launches Click Next at the dialog 3 The rst screen requiring con guration asks you to select the computer that the resultant policy should be focused on Group Policy is based on the user and the computer account, with the computer account existing in a location in the AD both in the OU and sites Computers have physical attributes, such as disk space and processor, which might affect WMI-Filtered policies The dialog enables you to specify the local computer (which works if you are running GPMC on the machine you want to test), or select Another Computer and browse to the computer you want to RSOP against (see Figure 21-73) Another option is to check the Do Not Display Policy Settings for the Selected Computer in the Results, which ignores all computer-based settings and returns results concerning the User Con guration In this case, select a workstation in the domain and click Next 4 The next screen displays a list of the users of the machine and those domain users that have locally logged on to the target machine (see Figure 21-74) As with the previous screen, you can also select the option to ignore User Con guration settings and instead display the Computer Con guration settings In this case,

Select the report to see three tabs, as shown in Figure 21-76 The Summary tab, as shown, is an HTML report with information about the GPOs that were applied, the Security memberships that were used for the application of GPO, and any WMI lters that were applied and their return status This can be seen in the example Notice the free drive space returned false, which means the Restrict Run GPO is not applied This restriction of execution can be seen if you select the GPOs section of the report and select Denied GPOs As shown in Figure 21-76, three policies were not applied for various reasons: the local policy was empty; the default domain policy was blocked because the Justice League OU blocks inheritance; and Restrict Run failed as the WMI lter did not pass

FIGURE 21-76 The Summary information is useful, and seeing the denied GPOs helps with
troubleshooting GPO problems
The Settings tab is the same for selecting a normal GPO, except it shows the combined settings of all the applicable GPOs for the user/computer object and for each policy of the GPO that set the setting Finally, the Policy Events tab scans the computer selected for all events that relate to Group Policy, which helps with troubleshooting in the event Group Policy is not applying correctly If settings or Group Policy change, which might affect the user or computer, right-click on the results and select Rerun Query from the displayed context menu This uses the values already entered, but it re-evaluates the GPOs, security, WMI, and so on Right-click the result and save it to a le for viewing of ine or mailing to other involved parties This feature, over many others, is key to troubleshooting GPO applications, especially those denied and the results of security and WMI There is another option on the actual client You have already seen GPUPDATE force an update of the Group Policy for a user and computer Another command-line tool, GPRESULT, is used to obtain the same information If the command is run without any parameters, the RSOP for the logged-on user on the local computer is calculated and displayed, as shown in the following output:
