The data set properties have been de ned Now add some actual data collectors to the set If you created the data collector set from counters de ned in Performance Monitor, you already have a data collector of type Performance Counter Right-click it and examine its properties The actual properties available vary based on the type of data collector Figure 20-24 shows a performance counter type; the Performance Counters tab shows all the counters that are being monitored It also shows buttons to allow counters to be added or removed To monitor every counter for a category, use the wildcard symbol (for example, Memory\*) To add the wildcard, just select the category, and click Add without selecting a speci c counter

once a second and set the number of samples to 60, it stops after a minute If the data collector set is con gured with a stop condition of when all the data collectors have completed, it s important to set a maximum number of samples or the set can never nish If, by contrast, you have con gured the data collector set with a data size or time limit, you don t have to specify a maximum number of samples, but you could do it if you only needed a small amount of information about a speci c data collector The File tab allows con guration of the name of the log le, which can be a static name; in addition, you can, like the data collector set subfolder, use a set of special characters that are expanded on to specify date and time If you are already using a subfolder that is date and time speci c for the data collector set, it s not as vital to use a unique name for the les written to by the data collector; the output will be to a unique folder each execution Also con gure the log mode for the le that is, append data if the le already exists, overwrite existing data, or if you have a maximum le size, specify circular logging where the oldest data is overwritten as needed To add a new data collector to a set, right-click the set, select New from the context menu, and select Data Collector You cannot modify the data collector sets that are part of the System only user-de ned sets The rst page of the Create New Data Collector wizard is to give a name for the data collector and its type, which can be performance counter data, event trace data, con guration data, or performance counter alert (see Figure 20-25) The performance counter data collector is what you have seen already It allows performance counters to be captured at a speci ed interval The Event trace data collector allows information to be captured about the system in addition to activities on the system This is facilitated through several Event Trace Sessions listed in the Startup Event Trace Sessions child item of the Data Collector Sets console tree item, which lists all the trace sessions available and if they are enabled If a trace session is not enabled that you want to use, right-click the item and select Start As Event Trace Session from the context menu All the available trace sessions are found under Event Trace Sessions, including traces related to the Event Log, WMI, Spooler, and NTFS The Con guration data collector allows information to be read from the Registry and recorded; the performance counter alert allows information to be gathered when performance counters reach de ned values that occur while the data collector set is running It is also possible to add data from management paths, such as WMI
