root is read-only does not limit the users navigating the structure to readonly for all the links; only the DFS root is limited You don t want users creating content under it anyway For each share the user is redirected to, the permissions are based on the share the user is redirected to and the local le system permissions, as if the user were accessing the le server share directly Note that a local path is created on the server as a launch point for the namespace By default, it is under the C:\DFSRoots folder After you create a namespace, you can view this location by using Explorer, and folders exist for the namespace structure

in this chapter, a domain-based namespace enables higher availability by having multiple servers host the namespace by reading from AD; this is generally the best option However, with Windows Server 2008, a standalone namespace can now be hosted on a cluster In addition, if the namespace is being hosted on Windows Server 2008 servers only, the Windows Server 2008 mode can be enabled, as shown in Figure 15-10

If you create a domain-based namespace and you intend to use it for production purposes, add additional name servers now before you start doing much with the namespace or giving users access Adding an additional name server is easy; select the namespace in the DFS Management snapin and you see four tabs:Namespace, Delegation, Search, and Namespace Servers (which lists the name servers for the namespace) With the namespace selected, select the option Add Namespace Server Enter the new server that acts as a namespace server Then click OK, as shown in Figure 15-11 The Add Namespace Server Wizard performs checks on the new server and remotely con gures it as needed, as shown in Figure 15-12 When the con guration is complete, you have an additional server that is servicing the namespace

By default, the domain-based namespaces read the DFSN con guration from the primary domain controller (PDC) Emulator FSMO role holder This ensures consistency among all the DFSN servers because if all DFS servers are reading and writing to a single domain controller, there is no chance of consistency problems Each server could see a different con guration if DFS servers read the information from their closest domain controllers If the closest domain controller were used, the information on the local domain controller shared with the DFS server would be affected by the time AD information takes to replicate between sites That amount of time could be signi cant, depending on the site link topology and replication interval If you have many name servers, it may become impractical for all of them to poll the PDC FSMO, so instead con gure the polling to take place on the closest domain controller via the Advanced tab of the namespace properties page (see Figure 15-13), which you access by rightclicking the namespace and selecting Properties If you enable the closest domain controller polling, take into account the time it takes for AD to replicate throughout the enterprise to ensure a consistent DNS namespace experience
