To create a site link bridge, right-click the IP Inter-Site Transports container and select New Site Link Bridge Like a site link, a site link bridge needs to contain at least two site links Don t specify sites; specify site links, which is what you are bridging, as shown in Figure 12-7

The Preferred Bridgehead
Generate UCC-128 In .NET
Using Barcode generator for ASP.NET Control to generate, create EAN 128 image in ASP.NET applications.
The bridgehead server is a server that is involved in the replication of data between two sites In Windows 2000, only one domain controller per naming context per site could act as a bridgehead server This was an issue If there many sites were replicating from a single site, such as in a hub-andspoke model, that one domain controller could get heavily overloaded In Windows Server 2003, this was changed so multiple domain controllers per site can act as bridgehead servers for a single partition/naming context There may be instances in which you want to specify a particular domain controller(s) to act as the bridgehead(s) for a site Perhaps you have speci ed particular boxes to better handle large amounts of replication, or you may have strict traf c policies/ rewalls between locations, and you need to ensure that replication occurs only between speci c domain controllers that have rules in the rewall or a router to allow communication

To set a server as a preferred bridgehead server, access the server s properties page in the Active Directory Sites and Services MMC snap-in At the bottom of the General tab, as shown in Figure 12-8, set the transports for which the server should act as a bridgehead by selecting them and clicking the Add button To remove a server from the role as a preferred bridgehead server, select the transport and click the Remove button

CAUTION When you set one or more domain controllers as preferred, then only those domain controllers can perform intersite replication If they are unavailable, then intersite replication stops because the Inter Site Topology Generator (ISTG) has no domain controllers it can use to perform replication Where possible, do not con gure preferred bridgehead servers as it adds complexity to the environment

FIGURE 12-8 Although making a server a preferred bridgehead is easy, it does not mean
you should do it
If you decide to go the preferred bridgehead server route, de ne a preferred bridgehead for all domains/partitions in a particular site For example, if you have domain controllers for Domain A and Domain B in a site, then a preferred bridgehead must be set on a DC from both domains If you don t do this, then the partitions that are not stored on any preferred domain controllers cannot be replicated intersite The KCC logs an event to the event log, notifying that the replication topology is not complete, and then set a preferred bridgehead server for the directory partition that cannot currently be replicated The KCC does this only when partitions have no preferred domain controllers set, but preferred domain controllers have been set for other partitions in a site If you want to view the domain controllers acting as bridgeheads, use the repadmin tool with the /bridgeheads parameter, as shown in the following example Notice that it shows the bridgeheads for each site and the partitions of the forest it is replicating
