Repeat this process for all the site links you need Create a HoustonDallas link, as shown in Figure 12-3 In this environment, Dallas is the hub location, so all other sites replicate via Dallas Because Dallas is the hub, place its name second, so it s easier to see which site is part of the link when just glancing, as the other site s name is rst Now select each site link and change its cost and replication frequency by right-clicking the site link object and selecting Properties In this example, the sites are well connected, so you can leave the cost as the default 100, but replicate every 15 minutes instead of 180 minutes, so changes spread more quickly There is the downside of having a shorter replication interval: Replication traf c between sites is compressed if larger than 32KB using high compression, resulting in data possibly being only 10% of the original size So the more you replicate, the less chance the data is larger than 32KB, so you lose the compression feature However, on modern networks of 15Mbps and above, this may not be an issue The other potential reason for replicating frequently may be that objects might have attributes changing value frequently, so replicating every 15 minutes may replicate a new value every 15 minutes instead of just getting a value once an hour or less Remember that you can also use the Change Schedule option to set speci c hours during which replication does not occur When the site links are all created, right-click DEFAULTIPSITE and delete it The next time the knowledge consistency checker runs, new connection objects are generated based on the new site links Or speed this up by right-clicking a server s NTDS Settings object and selecting All Tasks, Check Replication Topology, as shown in Figure 12-4

There are additional considerations The previous chapter discussed disabling the Bridge All Site Links option as part of the IP Inter-Site Transport properties, which means only sites directly connected via a site link can replicate But what if you need domain controllers in sites that are not directly connected to replicate Perhaps you have a scenario like the one illustrated in Figure 12-5, where a domain controller for the domain of the DCs in the sites on either side does not exist in the central site There would be no way to replicate between them because a domain controller for another domain cannot replicate the domain partition for another domain

One option would be to turn on the Bridge All Site Links setting, but there is a neater option: You can bridge speci c site links, which enables replication to occur between domain controllers linked by the bridge In this case, add a site link bridge to connect Site Link A and Site Link B, which would look as shown in Figure 12-6 This would then enable the two domain controllers to replicate because it would let AD know that network connectivity between the two nondirectly connected locations is possible The central site routes the traf c Using a site link bridge is a good way of controlling how replication can occur Use a site link bridge at locations that may have multiple-hub sites If the major central site becomes unavailable in a disaster, you want the spoke sites to replicate with the other hub location If Bridge All Site Links is turned off and the spokes only have site links to the now-of ine hub location, then that would not be possible The solution is to create a site link bridge between each spoke site link and the site link between the two hub locations, giving the spoke domain controllers a way to connect to the other hub location Under normal circumstances, the KCC would create
