The primary name for a domain with AD is now a DNS name, which enables a hierarchical namespace As you will see in the rest of this chapter, this is important to the more advanced directory service concepts Valid names for an AD domain are, therefore, names such as savilltechnet, acmecom, adssavilltechcom any valid DNS domain name which is where some confusion can creep in In DNS, the discrete namespaces where records reside are known as a DNS domain or zone; with AD a database replication boundary is also known as a domain Because domains rely on DNS as the locator service for every AD domain, an equivalent DNS zone must exist that supports the service type record and, ideally, dynamic updates However, if a DNS zone that correlates to an AD domain name does not already exist, the domain creation process installs and con gures DNS for you In addition to the DNS name for each AD domain, a legacy NetBIOS name is also maintained If you upgrade from Windows NT 4, the NetBIOS name carries over from the NT 40 domain However, for a clean, pristine AD, the NetBIOS name, by default, will be the rst 15 characters of the leftmost component of the DNS name (up to the rst period) For example, if your AD DNS name is savilltechnet, by default your NetBIOS name is savilltech, although this can be changed

During the installation of Windows NT 4 Server, you were asked whether the server would be a PDC, BDC, or standalone server When you install Windows 2008 Server (or even Windows 2000/2003), you are no longer asked this question This was always a major problem with NT 4 servers Having to de ne the server s role at installation time was a pain, and this has now been resolved Rather than de ning a server s roles during installation, you run a wizard after the operating system installation is complete to change the server to a domain controller or to change a domain controller to a normal server This wizard is known as Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS) Installation Wizard, and it is implemented by the dcpromoexe image (Domain Controller Promotion) It has a step-by-step approach to guide the whole process To initiate the ADDS Installation Wizard, you can run the dcpromoexe application from the Run dialog, from the Server
