Now that we have examined the RDP client in depth and connected to various types of systems, let s look at the licensing requirements for TS If you are running in Remote Desktop for Administration mode, there are no special licensing requirements However, if you intend to install the TS role on servers for general use, purchase Terminal Server CALs in two possible models: per user and per device The licensing server tracks perdevice CALs, whereas the honor system is used for per-user CALs A user or device needs only one TS CAL to connect to any number of terminal servers in the infrastructure for which they are licensed As with all other CALs, a TS CAL cannot be used across infrastructures Keep in mind that a TS CAL is permanently assigned to a speci c user While TS does return a CAL to the pool after 59 days, this fact must not be used to effect concurrent licensing TS CALs can be transferred only when a customer reasonably expects a user/device to never come back onto its system If you choose the per-device licensing model, the actual computer or device that connects to the terminal server receives a TS CAL Any user using the client with the TS per-device CAL has rights to access the terminal server, so this is a good model if lots of users use the same physical machine With the per-user model, the user account is granted the TS CAL and can connect to the terminal server from any computer or device, so this is a good model if you have select users who use many different machines To facilitate the checking and tracking of licenses, you must install a licensing server in the environment within 120 days of the rst client session logon to the terminal server, or that terminal server stops servicing user session requests unless the requesting client has a TS CAL that has been issued You get a 120-day grace period to get TS Licensing con gured If you want to use a combination of per-device and per-user CALs, choose Per User TS CAL mode, but keep tracking usage correctly in your environment Also remember that the licensing is per named device or named user If you have 20 shift workers all using the same Active Directory (AD) account, you need 20 per-user TS CALs, not 1 It s important not to confuse what the licensing server may see compared to your end-user-license agreement
