Stub zones were new in Windows 2003 and allowed a DNS server to maintain some knowledge of the name servers responsible for another namespace instead of having to perform normal searches via contacting a root name server, then a COM name server, and so on Like a normal zone, a stub zone contains records but only name server, start of authority, and special host records (known as glue records) Glue records exist only to help resolve the entries for name servers in the zone Even though a DNS server holds a stub zone, it is not con gured to be authoritative for the zone So why create a stub zone A stub zone keeps updated if name servers for the stub namespace change and so can query more intelligently when looking up records Let s create a stub zone for Savillinfo It does not have to be part of a different namespace and could be any DNS zone name 1 Right click the Forward Lookup Zones and select New Zone 2 Click Next to the welcome wizard initial screen 3 Select Stub Zone for the type of zone If you want to store in AD, check the Store the Zone in Active Directory checkbox and click Next (see Figure 7-56)

Forwarding and Conditional Forwarding
Let s say you work for a large company with lots of DNS servers for one namespace Each DNS server can query the Internet for records it is not authoritative for and then cache the results However, this means each DNS server is performing the same lookups that might have already been queried by another DNS server in the company It is possible to con gure forwarding on a DNS server to cause the server to send a query to the DNS server con gured for resolution of queries instead of performing iterative queries to resolve itself Therefore, each DNS server in the company could be con gured to forward to one or more central DNS servers, which then query the Internet for records The whole company can then query those servers for unknown lookups To create forwarders, right-click the DNS server, click Properties, and choose the Forwarders tab (see Figure 7-59) Add entries for each server to which the DNS server should forward queries After you con gure a forwarder, you can select that the DNS server uses root hints if no forwarders are available This means the DNS server goes to the iterative root and asks root servers for a COM name server, then the name server, and so on Forwarders are also useful for caching, but suppose you had delegated a portion of the namespace to another DNS server, such as asiasavtechnet Well, on the asia name servers, there are no such records to tell it to send savtechnet queries to that original server Con gure asia to forward all queries it is not authoritative for to the delegating server Now they effectively point to each other Let s go back to that big company that hosts multiple namespaces on different name servers How does each name server know which one to contact for each DNS zone Suppose you have two namespaces, as in the following list, and then another DNS server 19216815, to which all other DNS queries should go
