I amar prestar aen the world is changed Galadriel, The Lord of the Rings You may recognize this quote as the rst words from the movie The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring These words are just as true in the world of software development as they are in Middle Earth Our world is changed In the days of VB1 and VB2, it was truly possible to be a Visual Basic expert Everything we needed to know was in one handbook-sized manual Then came VB3 with its data access; VB4 with objects; and VB5 and VB6 with ActiveX, ActiveX Data Objects (ADO), and Distributed Component Object Model (DCOM) Suddenly it was impossible to be an expert in all things Visual Basic Then Microsoft took everything we knew, shook it up, turned it upside down, and gave us VBNET It felt vaguely familiar, but it de nitely was not the VB we knew Yes, it was different It was also bigger, more powerful, and fully object-oriented (OO) The VB integrated development environment (IDE) was replaced with Visual Studio, which supports Visual Basic and several other programming languages such as C# (pronounced C sharp ) This new IDE has an overwhelming number of features to help us create, build, test, and debug our applications Along with a new VB, we got the NET Framework The NET Framework includes a huge class library that provides thousands of features we can use to create applications, including prebuilt data types, Windows features, Web features, debugging features, access to the le system, and operating system functions Just about any code that we wrote in VB6 that accessed the Windows API can now be written using the NET Framework class library instead Since the NET Framework and the new Visual Basic are based on object-oriented concepts, understanding OO has become crucial for fully understanding our new VB and for getting the most from the NET Framework 1
