Let s look at an example that will tie together these concepts and make this easier to understand Let s say that we have a Text Box control that will be used to track the value of your favorite stock You purchased the stock at $2000 per share You obviously want to make money on your investment, but you don t want to hold onto the stock forever Therefore, if the share price is $2500 or more, you want to sell But you also don t want to lose too much money So, if the share price is $1800 or less, you want to sell then, too In this scenario, you can apply conditional formatting to your Text Box control so that you can see at a glance whether or not you should sell or hold If you sell, you also want to be able to easily tell whether or not you are going to lose money First, let s add one condition to the Conditional Format dialog that will add a background color of red to the Text Box if the value of one share of stock is less than or equal to $1800 (Note that the condition doesn t actually contain the dollar sign) Figure 54 shows the Conditional Format dialog with this condition (You ll have to trust us that the shading is set to red since we can t show the color in this and the following gures To see the entire set of formatting in all its glory, open the ConditionalFormatting form template included with the samples for this chapter on the book s Web site) Note that we changed the name of the eld to StockPrice so

that it s more descriptive We also decided to format the value as bold text so that it really stands out After you close the dialog by clicking the OK button, the condition is added to the initial Conditional Formatting dialog (Figure 55) Next, let s add a similar condition that will set the background color of the Text Box to green if the value of StockPrice is greater than or equal to $2500 We add that condition the same way we did the rst one except that

we choose green as the shading value Also, we will set the text to italic in this case instead of bold, just to make things interesting Finally, let s set the background color to yellow if the value of StockPrice gets within $100 of either $1800 or $2500 so we ll know that it s almost time to sell To do this, we ll have to specify four conditions in the Conditional Format dialog The rst two conditions specify that the value is greater than $1800 and less than or equal to $1900 The second two conditions specify that the value is greater than or equal to $2400 and less than $2500 The background color is set to yellow if either of these two sets of conditions applies Figure 56 shows the Conditional Format dialog after adding the four conditions Notice that the rst two and last two conditions are connected by using the and operator These two sets of conditions are joined by using the or operator So, the outcome is that the background color of the Text Box is set to yellow if the stock price is between $1800 and $1900 or between $2400 and $2500
