dialog to specify your conditions and what to do if the condition is true when the user lls out the form At the very top of the dialog is the section where you specify your conditions You can specify one or more conditions to be evaluated when the user lls out the form Each condition usually consists of three parts a quali er, an operand, and a value You choose the quali er from the leftmost drop-down list box in the condition section of this dialog The quali er can be one of four values a eld, an expression, the user s current role, or a set of signable data By default, the eld to which the control is bound is listed as the quali er You can choose a different eld by clicking on Select a eld or group from the quali er drop-down When you do so, the familiar Select a Field or Group dialog is displayed, from which you can choose a eld as the quali er If you choose The expression from the quali er drop-down, you can add your own expression as the condition In this case, there is no operand drop-down, only a value eld for you to enter your expression The User s current role quali er allows you to base the condition on the current role of the user (We ll discuss user roles in 13, so we won t go into much detail here) Finally, you can base your condition on a set of signable data A set of signable data is created when you add a digital signature to a Section control, which we ll talk about in 11 The second drop-down in the Conditional Format dialog lets you choose the comparison operand for your condition Depending on the quali er you

select in the rst drop-down, there could be many operands to choose from or only a few For example, if you select a eld as the quali er, you can then choose from many operands, such as is equal to, is blank, is not present, and so on In the case of a set of signable data, you have only two choices for the operand: is signed or is not signed An expression has no operand because, in this case, you must manually create the expression Most of the operands are self-explanatory and are things you ve seen before Two additional operands matches pattern and does not match pattern allow you to perform conditional formatting based on a preset pattern, such as a phone number, or a pattern that you create yourself Pattern matching is particularly interesting when used with data validation, so we will postpone our discussion of pattern matching until later in this chapter The third drop-down allows you to enter a value that will be evaluated along with the quali er and operand If you have speci ed a eld as the quali er, the value drop-down will allow you to choose many options, such as text, a number, a date, or a time Which options are available depends on the data type of the eld to which the control is bound For example, a Text Box control bound to a string eld will show all the options just mentioned in the value drop-down If the Text Box is bound to a whole number eld, you won t be able to choose the options to enter text, a date, or a time When you choose one of these options, the drop-down list box converts to a text box, which allows you to enter the data you wish to use when evaluating the condition In addition to entering a value, you can choose to select a eld or group whose value will be used in evaluation You can also choose to enter a formula Choosing the Use a formula option from the value drop-down opens the familiar Insert Formula dialog (discussed in s 3 and 4), which allows you to build a formula to use in the condition If you want to specify more than one condition, use the And button Clicking this button inserts a new condition When the new condition is inserted, a new drop-down appears for the previous condition (Figure 53) This drop-down allows you to specify an operator to use to join the two conditions You can choose either and or or as the operator Obviously, choosing and means that all conditions must apply, and or means that either one or another condition must apply When you specify multiple conditions, keep in mind that the conditions are evaluated from top to bottom
