Once you change the data type to something other than Text (string), the Format button next to the Data type eld becomes enabled When you click on this button, the Integer Format dialog opens (Figure 426) The format options available in the Integer Format dialog depend on the type of data for the control In this case, since the data type is Whole Number (integer), three options are available None (display XML value), Number, and Currency By default, for the Whole Number (integer) type, the formatting type is Number In Figure 426, we have changed the formatting type to Currency Now, when we preview the form and enter a salary gure into the Text Box for the minimum salary desired, when we tab out of the control, the value is automatically formatted for currency (Figure 427)

In addition to the Binding section of the Data tab, some of the properties dialogs contain a Default Value section In this section, you can specify a value that will be used as the default for the control when a user begins lling out the form (This is the same default value we talked about in 3) This is particularly useful if most users usually enter the same data into the control and only a few enter a different value For example, if you have created a status report form template wherein the user enters his or her department name, if this form is usually lled out by people in your department and only rarely by those in another department, you could include your department name as the default value for the department name Text Box The Data tab for most of the properties dialogs of several controls, such as the Text Box and Drop-Down List Box, contains another section called Validation and Rules (In some cases, it s called just Validation) This section of the Data tab allows you to include instructions to InfoPath about how to validate the data entered into the control We ll discuss the topics of data validation and rules in 5 If you open the properties dialog for a container control that is connected to data such as a Section or Optional Section, you will notice that the Data tab looks a bit different than in the properties dialog for the standard controls Let s look at the properties dialog for the Optional Section that stores information about the minimum salary desired (Figure 428) At rst it may strike you as being odd that the title of this dialog is Section Properties even though you opened the dialog for an Optional Section control The reason for this is quite simply that the Section and Optional Section controls are basically the same control The main difference is whether or not the control is included in the form by default when a user initially lls out the form Remember that an Optional Section and the contents within it are not included in the underlying XML of the form until the

user inserts the control by clicking on the Click here to insert link However, a Section control is included in the underlying XML by default when the form is opened You can actually change a Section to an Optional Section, and vice versa, through the Default Settings section of the properties dialog for these controls Notice in Figure 428 that Do not include the section in the form by default is selected If you select Include the section in the form by default and click the Apply button, the Optional Section will change to a Section control (In fact, the design-time visuals for the control, speci cally the text shown in the tab below the control, will change to re ect the fact that this control is now a Section instead of an Optional Section) When you ve chosen Do not include the section in the form by default, three buttons become enabled Rules, Edit Default Values, and Customize Commands We ll discuss the Edit Default Values and Customize Commands options
