You can modify individual Web content zones in Internet Explorer by clicking the Custom Level button in the Internet Options dialog (refer back to Figure 118) InfoPath respects some settings in the resulting Security Settings dialog For example, under Miscellaneous, you can modify crossdomain data access for the Internet zone (on the Access data sources across domains setting) from Disable to Enable or Prompt Clearly, we do not advise anyone to loosen up security settings for a given zone Our intention is to point out that InfoPath respects specific IE settings surrounding security

Network administrators may want to be able to dictate a blanket level of security for their organization Microsoft Of ce offers a solution through the Of ce Customization Tool (OCT) InfoPath participates in the OCT, in one way, by letting an administrator restrict users opening forms in the Internet zone To disable the opening of any forms from the Internet zone, an administrator can simply open the OCT and set the Disable opening of solutions from the Internet security zone policy To run the OCT, insert the original CD or DVD from which you installed the 2007 Microsoft Of ce system Instead of simply running the setupexe program from the disc, open a Windows command shell and navigate to the directory where setupexe is located Run setupexe /admin to open the OCT The OCT window will appear similar to that shown in Figure 1111

As you may have guessed, the trusted sites zone offers the highest level of trust for domain forms When compared to other IE Web content zones for domain trust, the trusted sites zone loosens up many security constraints If you need one or more of the following, a trusted sites form will t the bill: ActiveX custom controls not safe for scripting Cross-domain data access No security prompt (such as Figure 1110) for cross-domain access OM security level 2 access As we know, it s not possible to publish a form template directly to a trusted sites zone InfoPath automatically, with help from IE, classi es forms according to their published zone For a form to open in the trusted sites zone, the user of the form must add the URL of the form template (xsn) le to the trusted sites list But use caution when adding a site to the trusted sites list, as IE will trust all content from that site!

Publishing a form whose access path is a local computer path is not a very compelling scenario for InfoPath Since such a form isn t accessed through a le share or Web site, the form would be useful for only someone using that particular computer Since InfoPath is ideal in a business setting for lling out forms that could be part of a bigger data work ow environment, private use isn t prevalent Nevertheless, if a form is run from your computer, it is not allowed free reign In fact, the level of security may surprise you Two types of domain forms can run in the local machine zone (LMZ): those form templates that are installed and those that are not installed Unlike InfoPath 2003, installed domain templates do not have more permission than templates that are not installed in the LMZ LMZ form templates, when lled out, are forced by InfoPath to run in the local intranet zone and are sandboxed to a randomly generated domain The motivation behind locking down these templates is due to the inherent security risk when using the Web For example, an unknowing user could download and open a form without understanding that he or she just gave that form a whole lot more permission than just opening it straight from the Web would do Even form templates installed by running a Microsoft Installer program are locked down despite a heavyweight installation process requiring administrator privileges As all security-conscious users should know, one doesn t blindly run any script or executable program without completely understanding where it came from and what it does But given the bad habits of some users who click OK and Open to almost every prompt (not to mention those who may also unknowingly run everything as a system administrator), it becomes very important for InfoPath to protect all of its users from malicious hackers and their evil intentions
