one or more validation constraints, such as if it s an integer data type, it s silently bypassed with property demotion As you know from previous chapters, InfoPath fails to open forms with validation errors Therefore, it s critical that you check the Allow users to edit data in this eld by using a datasheet or properties page option only for elds with simple data types such as string Also, you should ensure that there is no declarative validation on the demoted eld Likewise, check that the other declarative validation in your form template does not reference a demoted eld Furthermore, any calculations, rules, or form code (which we ll discuss in Part II of this book) associated with demoted elds are never run when demoted values are changed Due to these inherent risks, we advise that you use property demotion with caution The Allow non-validated editing on Windows SharePoint Services (Advanced) checkbox is not available for all elds Only elds that subscribe to a simple data type (such as string, integer, Boolean, and so on) and those that do not repeat or are not under a repeating eld or group are eligible When property demotion does not apply for a selected data source node, the checkbox is disabled

If your form template is browser-enabled and a SharePoint server is running Forms Services, you are ready to publish a form for use in a Web browser! Clearly, this method of publishing is superior if some of your users do not have the InfoPath client application installed For those who have the InfoPath client, forms opened from Forms Services can still open in the client We ll discuss Forms Services in 14

E-Mail One of the more convenient ways to deploy a form template is to drop it into your users e-mail inboxes Templates that are well suited for e-mail deployment typically are smaller in size, are quick to ll out, and have a submit data connection so everyone s form data can get saved in a central location Recipients of your e-mail do not require Outlook 2007 But since InfoPath and Outlook integrate quite nicely (as we ll see in 13), there is a richer experience awaiting those with an Outlook 2007 e-mail client

To initiate e-mail deployment, select To a list of e-mail recipients in the Publishing Wizard (refer back to Figure 92) The next wizard page asks for a form template name (Figure 914) This name is not used as the name of the template attached to the e-mail (The attachment le name is the one you chose when saving the template before publishing) Instead, the name you enter in the text box shown in Figure 914 is used as the form name and part of the ID; it also appears in the subject line of the e-mail Form name is overloaded in this case, since the real form name (as well as the form ID) property can be set in the Form Properties dialog from the Properties menu item on the File menu

What happens when a user wants to ll out an e-mailed form template but can t nd the original e-mail If the user already opened the form template once, it appears in the Recently Used Forms section on the Getting Started dialog shown when InfoPath rst opens That way, the user can ll it out over and over without having the original e-mail The Getting Started dialog is discussed in 2

The next page in the wizard asks for promoted properties (Figure 915) This is the same page we saw when publishing to a SharePoint site or Forms Services Promoted properties are available as columns in Outlook for forms submitted via e-mail and when used with an InfoPath form folder Since this topic is tangential to publishing via e-mail, we ll suspend discussion until 13 The next page in the wizard simply offers advice for how to handle forms received in e-mail It mentions that in order for promoted properties to work correctly in Outlook, an InfoPath form folder must be created After you click the Publish button, an e-mail opens in Outlook, as shown in Figure 916 The form template is attached to the e-mail, although it may not visually appear to be the case There are a couple of restrictions when publishing via e-mail The rst restriction is that e-mailed templates may not request anything but restricted permissions The Publishing Wizard will disable the Next button if To a list of e-mail recipients is selected but the form requests higher privileges than restricted You can nd a permissions setting in the Form Options dialog from the Tools menu in the Security and Trust category Any data connections accessing another domain (ie, one computer to another), for example,
