the items you selected in the Drop-Down List Box controls would be remembered The data connection is merely providing the list of items in the control as there is no binding association between the secondary data source and the Drop-Down List Box

Using the Main Data Source for List Box Items Another neat feature of List Box controls is their ability to pull data not only from secondary data sources (as we just saw) but also from the main data source! As you know from Figure 713, a List Box requires that you select a node that is repeating or has a repeating parent Instead of selecting a node from a secondary source, let s just choose the main data source For our grocery form, we enjoy the ability to track what groceries we need in addition to how many and whether or not we re done buying them However, we also want the ability to take notes on some of the food we buy Say that the apples look a little bit ripe; we want to note that we should eat them sooner rather than later We ll continue designing the form template by adding a Repeating Table control with two columns at the bottom of the view (A le named GroceryShoppingList3 is included with the samples for this chapter) Let s change the rst Text Box to a List Box and go to its properties dialog This time we select the Look up values in the form s data source so we can get the list of grocery items that have been added to the form as it s being lled out For the entries, we ll select the Item node, as shown in Figure 716

Filtering List Box Items You can imagine that the XML le (or whatever the external data source might be) that holds all of the possible grocery items could be quite large It could get so large that nding your item in the List Box could be a lengthy task! How can we keep the form useful and easy to use even when there are hundreds of possible grocery items to choose from Filtering is the answer to too much data problems, especially when it s displayed directly to the user in a control such as a List Box or Drop-Down List Box

When we created our sample XML le for the GroceryItems data connection, each grocery item had two attribute elds (as shown in Figure 714): name and category Since items are categorized, we can lter the returned data by category Let s see how we can adopt our form to use a category lter when selecting a grocery item First, we ll need to insert a new Drop-Down List Box control that will display the list of categories and act as the lter (Inserting this control will also add a eld into the main data source We should rename the node to lter in the data source so we can recognize it later) We ll want to set up this Drop-Down List Box similarly to the DropDown List Box shown in Figure 713, but instead of selecting the name node for the Entries value, we want the category node Since getting the categories from the grocery items will return duplicate entries, we can enable the Show only entries with unique display names checkbox We ve now added a mechanism that the user can interact with to choose the lter he or she wants But ltering won t actually work yet since we haven t set it up Since we want to lter the Drop-Down List Box that shows all of the grocery items, that is where we need to apply the lter To add the lter, go to the Drop-Down List Box Properties dialog for the Items node This is the same properties dialog we saw in Figure 713 Click
