Is there an expansion cartridge plugged into the circuit edge Usually accessed through the battery compartment, the cartridge port may or may not be occupied. If it is, remove the cartridge and set it aside. After bending, your new Incantor will accept the expansion cartridge once again, and even have something to say about it. You ve gathered all the needed parts and you ve opened things up. You ve studied the diagram. Now, step by step, you ll complete the transformation. Here s how.
Choosing a Cool Control Layout
Up to you! The usual Incantor layout (refer to Figure 17-1) will work fine for a Speak & Math. Vary as you like, keeping in mind that grouping the two looping and three bending switches together simplifies Incantor wiring.
Case Considerations
As you expected, check out the comments in this section for Project 2 ( 15). The Speak & Math is no different.
Marking the Board
Using your tiny-tipped Sharpie, marker, mark the soldering points as shown in the diagram (refer to Figure 17-2).
Drilling Holes
Same as before. All holes start with your pilot bit of 1 8" or so in diameter. Most critical here is the spacing of the three bending switches. If you ll be placing them as in the main layout illustration (refer to Figure 17-1), you must be careful to keep the switches from hitting the speaker or each other. Mounting these three switches along the edge of the housing is, again, another possibility (on the speaker side of the instrument), just as I described for the pushbutton Speak & Spell covered in Project 1 ( 14).
All the same considerations apply as with the original Speak & Spell covered previously (Project 1, 14).
17 Project 4: Speak & Math Incantor
Control Mounting
Exactly as before, mount all components prior to soldering. As with all Speaks in the series from the membrane Speak & Spell onward, you have the two main choices of locating the group of three bending switches: either next to the speaker (refer to Figure 17-1) or along the side ( 14, Figure 14-1).
Using your bus wire, connect together the middle lugs of the three bending switches (refer to Figure 17-2). Be sure that the wire touches only the soldering lugs intended and nothing else. Using your insulated wire-wrap wire, finish this three-switch matrix by soldering the indicated switch lugs to the circuit points shown. You ll be soldering four wires here: one to the three lugs you just connected together, and one to each of the three switch s lower lugs. Next, wire the two switches of the looping matrix, exactly as shown. Wire the pitch dial as shown. Wire the body-contact as shown. Wire the reset switch by snipping one of the wires coming from the battery compartment and soldering your normally closed pushbutton switch in the middle (see Appendix A for reset button wiring).
You might look for envelope LED bends as well. Several usually exist. Know, however, that some LED bends will keep the circuit from operating correctly depending on the version of the Speak & Math you re working on and where you wired the bend. If the circuit seems to stall or not start during the testing section that follows, remove the LED from the circuit and begin the test routine again. If the LED burns too brightly, add a 100 ohm resistor (brown-black-brown color code) to its anode (the usually longer lead and always the one terminating inside the LED as the smaller metal mass). Be sure to try different resistors when adjusting LED brightness.
