and refreshing Did you even know that you can choose how a browser caches and refreshes its cached version of your site s HTML output More important, are you aware that there are coding practices you can use that can influence how a browser caches your pages All browsers attempt to improve the browsing experience of their users by caching pages whenever users visit them. This way, if the user returns to the page soon afterward, the browser need not return to the host server to obtain the page (as well as its graphics, any JavaScript stored in files, and so on). But how long does a browser wait before it considers the cached version of a page stale When does it make a new request to the host server for the latest copy A certain browser setting controls this interval, and you can use it perform some additional testing of your application. Both major browsers (IE and Navigator) make general assumptions about how best to cache pages and perform refreshes. But you can, as a test, override those assumptions and force a browser to refresh the cache (revisit the server) on every visit or perhaps only once per session (since the browser started) or never (which is, of course, not very useful for general purposes). Since you can t know what settings your visitors may enable, it pays to determine how your site responds to the various settings. Again, later in this section, we ll offer a sidebar to discuss some of the coding options that can influence how your page should direct the page caching mechanisms in the browser. But here s how to simulate different user-settable configurations. In Internet Explorer 5.5 and 6, use Tools Internet Options and from the General tab select the Settings button under Temporary Internet Files. There, in the option Check for Newer Versions of Stored Pages, you can select among the options offered ranging from Every Visit to Never. The default is Automatically. (Unlike the settings for cookies and JavaScript, where you can distinguish local intranet from internet sites, this setting applies to all types of sites.) In Netscape Navigator 4.7, use Edit Preferences and choose the Advanced category, then the Cache subcategory. From there, choose an option for Document in Cache is Compared to Network. The choices are similar to IE, ranging from Once per Session (the default) to Never. Navigator 4.7 offers no Automatically choice. Netscape 7 uses virtually the same command options to open the dialogue but it does offer an additional choice of when the page is out of date, which is the default. Forcing the browser to refresh the cache on every visit is an expensive proposition, although doing so may very well be justified if the page contains data for which the user wants the latest version all the time. Just consider the cost of a user enabling the Every Time option (supported in all the listed browsers): Not only are the browser and the user s network connection performing extra work and not benefiting from the usefulness of caching, but your server and its network connection are also burdened by the fact that users may be making page requests to your server more frequently (than they would if the browser normally served them pages from the cache). This cost is why the default setting in each browser is not to refresh on every page. But this approach also has a downside: What if the page that the user is requesting is indeed a dynamically generated one Have you ever observed a situation where you know that data has changed in a database on the server, but a page built from that database is not reflecting the update This is what happens if the browser uses a cached version of the page. Some browsers try to solve the problem to a degree by not caching form action pages, so that a refresh of those is generally going to get the latest version, but many database-generated pages are not the result of form submissions.
