Selections can be cut, copied, pasted, and deleted similarly to the selections in ACID. Pressing the Delete key while you have material selected eliminates the selected material. If your selection spans both channels, the time is deleted, and the material after the selection will become attached to the material before the selection. If you have only one channel selected, the material is simply replaced with silence in that channel. Cutting (Ctrl+X) has the same effect as deleting, except that the material will be retained in the clipboard for later pasting. Copying (Ctrl+C) puts the material in your clipboard without affecting the original wave. Pasting material from the clipboard will insert the audio material at the cursor s position. If you have a portion selected, it will be replaced by the new material.

If you want to create a new wave quickly from your current selection, you can choose Edit Copy to New. If you want to create a new wave quickly from material that has already been copied or cut, choose Edit Paste to New. Otherwise, you can create a new blank waveform by pressing Ctrl+N (for new) and then pasting in the material.

The Transport window, shown in Figure 5-12, has many of the same buttons that ACID has. Stop, Play, Pause, Play Looped, Go to Beginning, Go to End, and Record all have similar functionality. Additionally, there are Rewind and Fast Forward buttons that speed backward and forward through the audio file, and a Play from Cursor to End of View button that stops playback when the cursor reaches the edge of the screen. You can toggle the Transport s visibility by selecting Transport Controls from the Window menu.

The Zoom window, shown in Figure 5-13, contains a group of buttons that are similar in look and function to the zoom buttons in ACI. Zooming in and out horizontally displays less and more time of the waveform, like the horizontal zoom in ACID. Similarly, zooming in or out vertically exaggerates or reduces the visualization of the waveform s amplitude. The Zoom Out Full Both Axes button acts like double-clicking the zoom tool in ACID, and displays the entire wave in both the horizontal and vertical directions. If you ve selected a portion of the waveform, there are a few zoom buttons that come in handy. The Zoom To Selection button fills up the entire viewable waveform area with your selection. The Zoom In To Right Edge of Selection and Zoom In To Left Edge of Selection buttons function like more like the Zoom In Horizontally button, except that while the Zoom In Horizontally button zooms in to the center of the currently displayed waveform portion, the Zoom In To Right Edge of Selection and Zoom In To Left Edge of Selection buttons are centered on the edge of the selection.

Selection/View
The Selection/View window is a numerical way of looking at the portion of your waveform that is selected and currently in view. You will notice these numbers changing as you scroll and zoom your view and alter your selection. You can manually type in new values to affect both your selection and your view. To alter the start point of your selection, type the new beginning point in the Begin box. To alter the end point, either type the new end point in the End box or the new length in the Length box. The View parameters behave similarly, defining the amount of material displayed on your screen.

Processing
An entire book could be devoted to Adobe Audition, but mashup producers will be interested primarily in its audio processing capabilities, most notably the Center Channel Extractor. To apply an effect, first you need to select a portion of your wave. If you do not select any portion, Audition will automatically select the entire wave before processing. There are a variety of effects available, mostly in submenus of the Effect menu. The Amplitude, Delay Effects, Filters, Restoration, Special, and Time/Pitch submenus each have a bunch of cool effects. Feel free to play around with these effects and see what they do. A few of these effects are discussed in detail in 10.
