You now have two channels, each with a relatively isolated vocal. Press Ctrl+L and then play to listen to only the left channel, and then press Ctrl+R to listen to the right. 10. Select the left channel of this wave and copy it (Ctrl+L+C), create a new stereo waveform (Ctrl+N), select the left channel of the new stereo waveform, and paste (Ctrl+L+V). 11. Select the right channel of your extracted acapella waveform and copy it (Ctrl+R+C), create another new stereo waveform (Ctrl+N), select the left channel of the second new waveform, and paste again (Ctrl+L+V). You are pasting both channels from your extracted wave into the left channels of two new waves because they are both derived entirely from the left channel of the original Milkshake. 12. When you re done, you ll have a second extracted acapella extremely similar to the original extracted acapella, only this time the vocals are from the right channel of the original Milkshake. 14. Copy the entire left channel of the new extracted acapella (Ctrl+A+L+C), and select the right channel of the waveform you created in step 10, and paste in the data

(Ctrl+A+R+V). Now copy the entire right channel of the newly extracted acapella and paste it into the right channel of the waveform you created in step 11. 15. The second waveform (from step 11) contains the 16.99101-second delay. To remove this, make sure all of both channels are selected (Ctrl+A+B) and type 0:16.99101 in the Selection End (upper-middle) text box in the Selection/View window. Press the Delete key. Both acapellas now have identical timing. Alternatively, you may choose a shortcut and simply create two separate mono acapellas. If you choose to do this, instead of performing steps 10-15, select the left channel of the extracted acapella wave and copy it (Ctrl+L+C), create a new mono waveform (press Ctrl+N and choose Mono), and paste (Ctrl+V). Repeat the process for the right channel, deleting 16.99101 seconds as outlined in step 15. Whew! You ve just created two stereo acapellas. The first stereo acapella has all the sounds in the full song, eliminating all sounds that continue in the next section. The second stereo acapella has all the sounds in the full song with all sounds in the previous section eliminated. There is a good chance you may need to use both acapellas. Suppose you have a simple song with four sections. The first section is just a drum loop, the second and third sections have vocals and the drum loop, and the last section is just a drum loop again. The goal is to isolate the vocals from sections two and three. With the acapella that eliminates all sounds from the following section, the second section may sound tinny, because the frequencies from the third section s vocal will be eliminated from it. The third section will sound great, though, because only the loop from the fourth section will have been eliminated from it. With the acapella that eliminates all sounds from the previous section, the second section will sound great, because the first section contains only the drum loop. The third section will sound tinny because you are subtracting vocal frequencies from the vocal. The solution in this case is to use the second section from the second acapella, and the third section from the first acapella. In practice, you can load up both acapellas as separate tracks in ACID and use whichever sounds better during each part. You may even want to go so far as creating more than one pair of acapellas using different delay times.

Unmixing using the time-shifting technique can work wonders on modern extended dance remixes. Often, an intro will be very long and drawn out, while the instrumentation gradually gets denser and denser. Each new section introduces new sounds added on top of the sounds from the previous section. Shifting the time by exactly one section and performing side channel extraction will isolate the sounds that are introduced in each section. The extended outros offer similar extraction opportunities.
