After that you ve got the typical post output section, usually an h2 heading with a linked title for the post, and then the content or an excerpt of the content. You may want to make it fancy with images and so forth, using custom fields (embellishing posts is covered later). For now, though, you can be satisfied that this will contain your output of the featured post. Moving on, we ve got a typical basic loop with an addition. Line 8 is an if clause checking if the post ID is the same as the ID stored in the $do_not_duplicate object. If it is, we continue and update the post cache, otherwise we output it as normal. In other words, when you get to the featured post in your main loop, you ll skip it and move on.

Using the knowledge you ve gained thus far, in this section you ll put the multiple loop concept to the test. In this example you ll have three featured posts in one loop, then you ll imagine three columns underneath consisting of the latest posts from one category each. The idea is to mimic the front page of a non-bloggish site. In terms of template files, this would ideally be in the home.php template, which means that it would only be loaded when on the front page. Consider the following code: 47

Styling for your featured posts > < php endwhile; > <! Now begins the rst column loop > < php query_posts('category_name=apples&showposts=10'); > < php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); > if (in_array($post->ID, $do_not_duplicate)) continue; update_post_caches($posts); > <! Now begins the second column loop > < php rewind_posts(); > < php query_posts('category_name=oranges&showposts=10'); > < php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); > if (in_array($post->ID, $do_not_duplicate)) continue; update_post_caches($posts); > <! What happened here Start with the three featured posts. This is pretty much similar to the previous featured post loop example, but since you have three posts here and you don t want them to show up more than once, you need to store their IDs in an array. PHP-savvy readers will recognize the square brackets on the $do_not_duplicate object, which indicates that it is an array. If you re unfamiliar with the term array, it basically means that it is a series of stored information; in this case, three post IDs. These you ll check for in every loop that follows. Moving on, every one of the three column loops, one per category, is the basic (main) loop using the query_posts() template tag to limit the output. You ll recognize the category sorting and the number of posts they ll show from previous examples. Since you don t want to output any of the featured posts in the three category loops, you need to check the $do_not_duplicate object. You ll see that the if clause for this has changed a bit to reflect that it is an array. Finally, after the first column loop, which is the main one, you ll need to use rewind_posts() to be able to use it again, but with different sorting thanks to query_posts(). Repeat as needed. An optional solution for this would ve been to create four different loops of your own, just like you did with the featured post example, thus sidestepping $wp_query. However, there really isn t any need here. 48 The following listing is the actual post code output stripped of everything that would go in the CSS file, but with the necessary IDs and classes.
