as processing and transmission power. Nodes register with the nearest cluster head and become members of that cluster. Selection of cluster heads and partitioning of the nodes into clusters are essential aspects of mobile ad hoc networking. A clustering algorithm is basically a multileader election problem, and a cluster is similar to a group in distributed systems. Nodes within the cluster are considered members of the cluster head of that particular cluster. Sometimes, to be a member of a cluster head, a node has to lie within the transmission range of that cluster head. Nodes within the transmission range of more than one cluster head are usually called gateway nodes. A distributed gateway is a pair of neighboring nodes from different clusters physically located nearest to each other even though their clusters do not overlap (see Figure 2.3). Most

cluster-head election algorithms require that each node be a member of one cluster head and that no two cluster heads be adjacent to each other. In a sense, clustering stabilizes the network topology, makes use of channel economy, eases location management, and provides a simple and feasible power control mechanism for an ad hoc network. Several techniques for hierarchical construction of ad hoc network infrastructures will be discussed in detail in the sequel. Additional information on topology control and distributed clustering can be found in Rajaraman [1] and Basagni [2], respectively.

2.3 ROUTING WITH VIRTUAL COORDINATES Geographic awareness and on-demand topology formation are two well-known techniques for enabling scalability in ad hoc networks. The former (see Kranakis et al. [3], Bose et al. [4], Mauve et al. [5], and Al-Karaki and Kamal [6]) uses nodes locations as addresses, while the latter (see Johnson et al. [7], Johnson and Maltz [8], Johnson [9] and Perkins [10]) oods the network only when needed. Despite the fact that geographic awareness is often limited by the need to nd ways to route around voids, dead-ends, and obstacles as well as function in sparse environments with very low network densities, its advantages outweigh its limitations in that hosts need only keep their neighbors state and support a fully general any-to-any communication pattern without explicit route establishment. This section discusses how to establish location awareness. Subsection 2.3.1 discusses the general concept of beacons and how it can be used to build from scratch a coordinate system infrastructure. Subsection 2.3.2 discusses the limitations of anchorbased environments in creating unique naming and routing systems. Subsection 2.3.3 discusses a hybrid system that uses a combination of beacons with geographic information. 2.3.1 Beacon-Based Communication A radio beacon is a (usually omnidirectional) transmitter carrying a constant signal on a speci ed radio frequency. It has been used in the past (in aviation, at sea) and are currently being used (in amateur radio to test signal propagation, as well as in satellites) in conjunction with direction nding equipment in order to identify the position of an object. A similar concept but with slightly different functionality are base stations as used in wireless networks. These are low-power, duplex, multichannel radios that are in a xed location and they are being used by lowpower, single-channel mobile phones and wireless routers. As such, they serve as as the liaison that links the mobile phone to the underlying land-line, public telephone infrastructure. Building Virtual Positions. Beacon-supported protocols are based on selecting a few beacon nodes and constructing a basic communication tree from them to every other node.
