10.1. Introduction to the method The deployment of an application integration solution must respond to sometimes contradictory objectives: deploying the solution at the earliest time, to serve the first project that will use it; setting up an exchange infrastructure that is stable enough over time that it does not have to be modified every time a new project wants to use it; producing norms and rules for using the solution in order to maintain overall coherence and adjust the possible incompatibilities between projects; giving each project sufficient autonomy of implementation so that solution use is pertinent in its context; capitalizing on project experience to generalize rules for follow-up projects. The task is not easy. It is therefore particularly important to suggest a method for deploying application integration solutions whose principal objective will be to bring project constraints, infrastructural norms, capitalization and acquired experience into harmonious coexistence. Below, we present the principal lines.

10.2. Deployment methodology: general principles The implementation of an application integration solution must align with a program that is only launched (initialized) after selecting the solution. This program involves permanent resource elements (the competency center) as well as tasks to be ensured (quality assurance, communication, support, capitalization). It also calls on ad-hoc resources during the implementation of projects between this or that application. The method proposes a global approach that, from the outset, includes a longterm vision and stepped deployments (Figure 10.1).

at the level of each integration project, between applications that are selected according to departmental needs. Some recommendations can be made: deploying a version of the integration infrastructure involves much more than just taking account of the constraints of projects that will use it; the frequency of infrastructure versions must be lower than the frequency of project implementations; it is important to look for incremental edges between successive versions, so as not to put the whole of a previous version in question, and thus require a complete re-test; at the same time the application integration solution is launched, a capitalization program must be put in place; this capitalization program is input from development activities carried out during projects, by determining what will be useful in subsequent projects; the project launch phase can involve generic aspects that have already been capitalized on; the project assessment phase can involve looking for developments that could be capitalized; the project initialization phase must immediately define objectives, quantifying the means to establish scheduling; an application integration competency center is recommended at the same time as the initialization phase; the generic (capitalizable) aspects most often encountered include: - technical or business connectors; - access to enterprise repositories to check the dataflows; - definitions of pivot formats; - industrialization of parameter settings for transformations; - solution integration tests; - audit trails and supervision of the dataflows; - best practice recommendations for integration components; - frequently asked questions ( FAQ ).
