4.1. Integrating a single application 4.1.1. Exchange cartography The appearance of the EAI phenomenon in 1996-1997 correlated with the emergence of software packages for Integrated Management. Indeed, ERP (SAP R/3, Oracle Applications, PeopleSoft, etc.) initially put forward the replacement of the entire information system with a collection of modules developed using the same technologies and sharing the same repository. ERP seemed therefore to constitute a response to the range of problems in application integration, since it provided a system that was already entirely integrated. At the same time, in the real world, they did not cover all of the business needs of an enterprise and have often proved difficult to implement, precisely because their modules were not designed to communicate with other applications, though they exchange perfectly with each other. ERP systems have in reality only reinforced and amplified the problem of integrating applications of the enterprise. In addition, the ERP phenomenon occurred along with the implementation of software packages for Customer Relationship Management (CRM) or Supply Chain Management (SCM).

The introduction of ERP or of CRM or SCM software packages into an information system requires EAI-type integration projects to be implemented, and as a result, has constituted an essential factor in the development of the EAI wave . These one-off, ad hoc integration projects make up one of the most widespread cases of use for an integration solution of the EAI type: it is often the need to put a new business service in place or to renovate one IT application that leads to integration. There is no global objective of achieving a general infrastructure for exchange management. Rather, each project deals with its own integration problem. At first, this involves purely tactical projects. We will therefore strive to shed light on how to complete the interface between a new application and the rest of the information system. This type of project typically deals with problems of data propagation and repository data consistency (refer to section 2.4.1.1) between the applications of the enterprise IT thus, A2A.

To correctly carry through such a project, the following steps must be performed: first identify all the existing applications with which the new application will have to communicate; subsequently, determine the nature and volume of information to be exchanged between these applications; then evaluate the way in which each of these applications can communicate with the outside (using a file or database, sending a message, etc.); finally, determine the rhythm of the exchanges (in real-time, in sessions, in batch or delayed mode).

The result of this analysis is the production of a cartography of the exchanges and of their constraints that will help determine what needs to be covered by the integration tools to be put in place. 4.1.2. The integration platform The addition of the new application in the information system goes along with the implementation of an integration software platform that provides the complete set of services required to carry out mapped exchanges in an organized fashion. These services constitute a subset of the services detailed in 3, and include in particular: services in the transport and connectivity layer: - acquisition and delivery (adapters), - multi-channel communication bus; services in the information adaptation layer: - checking, - transformation, - routing; administration services (modeling); supervision services; etc. As this involves addressing the integration of a limited number of applications, the software integration platform will be implemented in the majority of cases using a hub-and-spoke architecture, to avoid having to deploy this infrastructure on the complete set of hardware platforms. The cartography completed previously (see section 4.1.1) will be used to set the parameters needed to exchange through the integration platform. The example below illustrates how a typical exchange progresses via an integration platform. Consider an application in an operational means of payment system, which generates a collection of events around debit dates for amortizable loans in a file. Two applications, client accounting and general accounting , are responsible for a certain number of accounting postings from these events, some of them only being taken into account two days after the corresponding debit event is created. These two applications can only receive information through files.
