HTTP HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) is a client/server communication protocol developed by the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) that is used for exchanging all types of data between HTTP client and HTTP server. The primary usage of HTTP is the implementation of Web applications that manage exchanges with browsers through HTML pages (Hypertext Markup Language), another W3C standard that makes it possible to describe Web pages. HTTPS is the variant of HTTP that is secured with one of the protocols SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) or TLS (Transport Layer Security). SMTP SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a protocol for sending messages between servers over the Internet. Messaging systems use this protocol to send messages. Then the receiver uses a messaging client and either POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3) or IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) to recover the messages from the server. SOAP SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) is a protocol for information exchange in decentralized, distributed environments. This protocol uses the XML standard (see section 3.2.1.1) and defines three portions: an envelope that constitutes a framework for describing the content of a message and how to process it; a collection of coding rules for expressing instances of application data types; and a convention for representing remote procedure calls and the associated responses. SOAP can potentially be used in conjunction with a wide variety of other standards. At the same time, its specifications only describe how to implement it on HTTP communications. SOAP is one of the standards on which the definitions of Web services rely (see section 4.5.3). ebMS ebMS (ebXML Messaging Service) is the ebXML (Electronic Business using eXtensible Markup Language see section 4.3.2) specification that defines a dependable and secure transport standard for messages. This protocol presents the following technical characteristics: it uses SOAP syntax with attachments; no communication protocol is imposed, even if HTTP and SMTP are the most widely used;

transported messages (useful load) are not necessarily expressed in XML. Traditional EDI formats, as well as messages based on XML, can be transported by an ebMS service; it uses existing security techniques, such as XML digital signatures (XMLDSIG), and public key encryption. RNIF RNIF (RosettaNet Implementation Framework see section 4.3.2) provides the layer for packaging, routing and transporting messages for the execution of RosettaNet PIPs (Partner Interface Processes). This protocol uses the two standards MIME and S/MIME, but imposes no communication protocol, even if it favors HTTP and SMTP. EDIINT The EDIINT protocols (EDI over INTernet), defined by workgroups of the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force), are exchange protocols available in three versions, each defined by an Applicability Statement (AS): AS1, which uses SMTP communications; AS2, which uses HTTP communications; AS3, which uses FTP communications. The EDIINT protocols were designed by EDI users for transporting the data over the Internet. They use the two standards MIME and S/MIME (for encryption and signature) and integrate functions indispensable to the electronic exchange of documents (notice of receipt/non-receipt, receipt of non-repudiation). The sender receives a notice of receipt and of correct decryption, referred to as a Message Disposition Notification (MDN). This acknowledgment guarantees that the transaction progresses correctly from end to end, and that it is also signed and encrypted. 3.1.3. Connectivity The multi-channel communication bus will therefore ensure the transport of data or of events. Upstream, in the application environment, the data or the events that applications produce must be captured to transmit the data or events expected by the downstream applications: this is the role of the adapters.
