The various needs to which the integration infrastructure must respond can be grouped into three major service levels: transport and connectivity; information adaptation; automation of business processes. Each level can in turn be divided into three subsets: modeling; execution; supervision. These levels and subsets are summarized in Figure 3.1. Subsequent sections explore them in detail. An application integration solution will always incorporate a portion of the service levels presented.

3.1. Transport and connectivity The transport and connectivity level a) captures information or events generated by source applications, b) transports them to the receiving applications, then c) delivers the data or events that those applications expect. As indicated, this level comprises three parts: modeling and therefore in this case the definition of data exchange partners and the rules for routing data between them; execution, or the capture, routing and passing of data or events; supervision of both these operations. 3.1.1. Defining partners In order to separate the applications from technical exchange parameters, those parameters must be externalized and centralized in a global repository that describes the complete set of elements for making sure that data or events can pass from one application to another.

This repository must contain the following information: the topography of the applications to be integrated, i.e., all the information for accessing these applications, such as: - location (application inside the enterprise or, in the case of a B2B integration, in the partner s system); - platform to connect to; - communication channel to use (inter-application messaging system, file transfer, DBMS, HTTP, SMTP, etc.); - protocols to use; - network address; - identifier of the database manager; - identifier for tables in the DBMS; - identifier for files; - name of the queues; - messaging system address; - etc.; the possible conditions for capturing data or events, and for delivering data or events, for example: - a timeslot for capture or delivery; - application triggering on reception of data or events; - etc.; information concerning security levels: - authentication; - encryption; - hashing; - non-repudiation. The complete set of information contained in this repository can then be distributed for operation to the execution components, i.e., the multi-channel communication bus and the adapters.

3.1.2. Data transport The transport of the data or the events requires a multi-channel communication bus. The exchange must be able to adapt to the different supports used, without imposing the privileged use of any one of them, which in this case would necessitate costly conversions. Below, we take a brief look at the principal channels that can comprise such a bus. 3.1.2.1. Database management systems The DBMS (database management system) constitutes a way to transport data between applications, since it offers basic replication mechanisms or inter-DBMS access bridges (gateways). For the most part, they are used in projects that require integration through the data (refer to section 2.4.1.1), essentially projects of integration through data propagation or integration of composite applications. In most cases, the semantics and the data models used by the applications to be integrated are compatible.

3.1.2.2. File transfer This is the oldest data transport mode implemented in network technologies. The development of Unix and PC platforms led to the extension of its usage through the FTP (File Transfer Protocol) standard. This standard has the advantage of being simple to implement. It is basic to most of the operating systems on the market. However, it has the drawbacks of being poorly secured and, above all, unsuited to heavy and voluminous operation of file exchanges. Indeed, it necessitates manual actions by the operators. This explains why, at the beginning of the 1980s, the file transfer managers that appeared on the market were much more elaborate than simple tools for implementing FTP, offering the set of functionalities required for secure, entirely automated transfers (Managed File Transfer MFT). Figure 3.3 presents the various services integrated in these managers.
