The second type of token card adds a time-dependant feature. The card has an embedded clock that constantly spools off to a digital display window what appears to be random numbers. A username identity is associated with the card, and the user must enter the token-generated number plus a PIN into the keyboard when requested to do so. A calculation is made from a seed record associated uniquely with each card against a time clock to match the card-generated number, so that a token number is valid for only about a minute. The card is time-synchronized with an authentication server that is capable of calculating what the number should be. There is five-way connection with timed token cards: A username identity (1) is associated with a token card (2); the user must enter the token-generated number (3) plus a PIN (4); and a calculation (5) is made from a seed record associated uniquely with each card against a time clock to match the cardgenerated number. The authentication is dependant on knowing the username associated with the token, knowing the username s password, having the token card to acquire the random number, and knowing the PIN. It is the level of complexity that makes this one of the best available methods of authentication. Newer variations of time-dependant token cards can be plugged into a port on a computer to relieve the end user from having to manually enter the random number the card generates. It adds a degree of difficulty for implementation because you need to include the authentication server, its maintenance and management, license fees, and administration of the issue process. There is also an implementation development requirement to integrate use of the token cards with networks, servers, and applications. Random-number token cards simply make hack attempts very difficult because a would-be hacker is trying to guess at a moving target the ever-changing random number string. (And the hacker would also need the card s username/ password/PIN combination to get any use out of the card.)

An alternative to having the end user carry around a random-number token card is to use a small software application that can be loaded on various types of end-user devices from handheld to notebooks to desktop computers. The software performs a similar job to the token card. When a computer or device is first placed on the network that is hosting the authentication server, it is synchronized from the authentication server. After the initial synchronization, the computer or device can generate its own random-number string from the software that will match the calculation expectation of the authentication server. The end user is still required to enter a PIN to complete the process.

Biological scans include any scanner or reader that can match a scanned biological feature of an individual such as voice prints, fingerprints, face recognition, or retina with an electronic record of a previous scan. A scan can be associated with username and user password, and can also require a PIN entry as well to add confidence. This method has not garnered widespread acceptance because of the additional equipment need, and perhaps because quite a few people think that bio scans are little freaky, and some consider them downright objectionable. Scans change authentication to include presence (being there). Add them to something you have (token card) and things you know (password and PIN), and you ve got a pretty good authentication system. On a confidence scale, though, how big a difference is there between having a token card and a PIN and being there for a bio scan with a PIN Not very much difference; certainly not always enough difference to justify the additional equipment required to do bio scans.
