There are six independent layers of data storage and management, as shown in Figure 7.2. The terms introduced in the description of these layers are discussed and properly defined in the next section. Physical disks. These are the actual disks where data is read and written. Storage area networking. A new addition to this layered model, SANs take either the physical disks or the LUNs (if present) and make them available via a network (often called a fabric) to the host systems on the SAN. Over the next few years, RAID capabilities will be added directly to the SAN, allowing centralized management of RAID levels, rather than requiring management in either a disk array or the host. We ll discuss SANs further in 8, SAN, NAS, and Virtualization. Hardware RAID. Hardware RAID services take the physical disks and organize them into logical units (LUNs), as explained in the preceding text. Management of Hardware RAID is generally performed from within a disk array, and has its own management tool. Management and configuration of LUNs fall outside the control of the host s operating system. Software RAID/volume management. Software RAID and volume management, which are usually so closely connected as to be inseparable, allow the host that uses the storage to take the disks, in whatever form it sees them, and build RAID configurations on them. The disks may be seen as simple disks or LUNs. The host system does not generally differentiate between the two, so Software RAID and volume management products cannot differentiate either. Filesystem or raw device. A host system builds its filesystem on top of the volume created by a volume manager, on a LUN, or on a simple disk, depending on which of the preceding layers have actually been employed. Not all applications require filesystems; some applications, notably image processing and data collection, use raw disks for pure speed, treating the volume (or LUN or disk) like a tape drive that has no real formatting and is a continuous stream of bytes from beginning to end. Application or database. The application writes its data to whatever type of device it has been configured to write to. The device could be a filesystem or a raw device. The raw device, in turn, could be a LUN, volume, or physical disk.
