A directory server is a database-like, networked repository that is optimized for hierarchical, read-mostly access to its data. Directory servers are frequently referred to as Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) servers, although technically LDAP is the protocol that is used to talk to the server that contains the directory. Directory servers are used most commonly in the web-based services realm as places to store configuration data for the web site, user registration information, and other data that needs to be shared by many access points.

Why not just use a database for everything Directories are optimized for reading, so they will typically provide better performance in the real-time world of the Web. Directory servers also use replication between a master server and several slaves, making reliability a function of choosing any available server. Directories also have a hierarchical (tree) structure, allowing entries to be organized to match organization charts, product data, or other data that fits the tabular or table-of-tables model. Databases excel at transactional integrity, high-volume updates, and inserts, so typically you ll find both directories and repositories behind the web and application server fa ade of a web site. The following are some considerations for making directory servers reliable:

Determine what the rate is of updates and the volume of updates. Directory servers replay updates from the master to the slaves, and high volumes of updates may slow down normal directory service. Ensure that you have enough slave servers to continue to provide high performance lookups even if one or more slave servers have crashed. Validate that the window of inconsistency the longest time period from when you make a directory update until that update is reflected in all slave servers is within the bounds of what your web-based applications can tolerate. If applications want strong read-back semantics that is, they want to see changes reflected in the data repository as soon as they re made you re probably going to need to use a database for the rapidly changing, instant-replay data.

Web services are enjoying the peak of their popularity in the trade press. Hailed as a new way of assembling applications from smaller components, web services represent (perhaps) delivery on the promise posed by objectoriented computing being able to connect application components together with minimal developer effort. The so-called WUS standards, coupled with Extensible Markup Language (XML) data representation, form the core of the web services universe:

Web Services Description Language (WSDL, pronounced whiz-dull the W in WUS) allows developers to describe what their web services do in terms of semantics and programmatic interfaces. Universal Description and Discovery Interface (UDDI the U in WUS) is a lookup service for web services interfaces. Need to find a server that has an instantiation of a particular service UDDI provides the equivalent of telephone directory service for you.

The Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP the S in WUS) is used to send XML messages between applications. SOAP most commonly uses http as its transport layer, making it another flavor of web traffic that builds on the reliability mechanisms outlined earlier in this section. XML is used to encode data in machine-independent fashion. One of the historical problems in application interoperability has been agreement on data formats; XML makes the data self-describing so that data interchange is a function of programming rather than a priori format discussions.

So what s the big deal about the big four standards Web services allow developers to assemble applications out of components, with a simple, small footprint of standards defining how those components are identified, located, described, and able to communicate with each other. Efforts such as Web Services Interoperability (WS-I) are creating profiles of the standards that form templates for interoperability of applications across multiple operating systems and developer environments. Think of web services as a sort of TCP/IP for applications the right building blocks to make networking easy, but the simplicity comes with additional responsibility for the developer (as we saw in 9, Networking ). How do you make web services reliable This is largely an open question, even with several years of work on the basic standards. The following are some guidelines for developers and deployers of web services:

UDDI and WSDL typically are built on top of registries like directory or database servers, with web server or application server interfaces. Web services implementations that depend on looking up interface information on the fly are going to be dependent on the availability of the UDDI and WSDL services; they need to be made highly available. Dynamic assembly isn t the same as reliable assembly. When you are choosing a service implementation, it s critical to know what best implementation means most reliable most scalable Initial deployments of web services between enterprises should center around services where the deployment characteristics, including security, can be well defined to ensure that the quality of the assembled service meets the service level requirements of both parties. In addition to the reliability of the network services on which the WUS standards are built, web services that cross boundaries between systems need to be aware of security, performance, and transactional consistency issues. Assembling services with dependencies on long-running back-end services may not meet the real-time goals of the users of that service.
