I was taking a data center tour at a large financial company in New England. (It is rude to turn down tours, after all.) Among the rows of large boxes and the LEDs, I saw something that I had never seen on a tour. While many data centers put printed labels on their systems that identify the system s name, manufacturer, and model, these people had labeled their systems in a somewhat unusual way. In addition to the usual information, their system labels contained the system s function, and the original cost of the hardware. When I asked why, they told me that it was a matter of pride. All I could figure was that this gives a malicious tour-taker a road map to exactly which systems he wants to sabotage. Evan

With companies so eager to show off their data centers, it makes it very easy for a malicious person to gain entry, where they can lag behind their tour slightly and perform mischief. Imagine someone from your major competitor visiting your office on the pretense of a job interview. It s very common for technical job interviews to end with a data center tour. Once in the data center, the interviewee can fall a few steps behind his tour guide and accidentally trip over a power cord, lean on a power switch, or perform other mischief. Even the best-intentioned tour guest could cause trouble on a tour, by tripping on a cord, knocking something over, or hitting a power switch by mistake. We d like to see businesses return to the glass house model, where visitors can look but not touch.

You wouldn t take a stranger on a tour of the vault where the company stores its cash. ( And over here are our $100 bills. ) Why take them into the data center If they don t need to be there to do their job, don t let them in.

On yet another data center tour, a system administrator was hurriedly bringing some equipment down the row that we were standing in. Everyone on the tour stepped aside as best they could to let him pass. In my haste to get out of the way, I backed into an old-fashioned line printer, and right into the power switch, turning it off. The printer was printing something, so the job was lost. I saw what I had done and quickly (and very smoothly) turned it back on. I don t think anyone noticed (except for the person who had printed the job). Even well-intentioned and careful visitors to data centers can cause problems. Evan

Off-Site Hosting Facilities

The last few years have seen the emergence, and then the near total disappearance and reemergence, of companies dedicated to off-site hosting facilities for computer systems. There are still large companies who offer this service as a part of other offerings, most often consulting, but the small ones were casualties of the dot-com bust. Early generation off-site hosting facilities (OHFs) consisted of a large room partitioned off with metal cages. Each cage had rigid walls that were made of thick welded and painted wire in a heavy frame, arranged in a grid pattern that went up to or just short of the ceiling. The open grid made ventilation between the cages possible and prevented too much heat buildup in any one cage. Cages were fairly small, and it was not unusual for one company to have several cages scattered around the facility. The floors were standard data center white raised floors. Cooling, humidity control, and power protection was centrally provided by standard data center air-conditioning devices. After visiting a few of the early-generation off-site hosting facilities, we came away with some significant concerns about the level of security and protection that these sites offer. Even though facilities like these are hard to find anymore, if they even still exist at all, the lessons that they left behind are valuable and are worth exploring. These lessons included the following:
