It is impossible for a network administrator to deal with all of these changes manually and keep the network in a good state based on the current view Keeping track of all the changes and recon guring the network quickly enough so that the network is con gured well for the current state of the network is an impossible task to do manually This is because it is dif cult for a human to select the correct values for each of the con guration parameters This is a complex optimization problem Further, by the time a human solves the problem and implements the new con guration throughout the network, it is likely that the state of the network would have changed substantially, thereby making the new con guration suboptimal Therefore, an approach that automates network management of wireless ad hoc networks is very much needed We will next discuss a new approach that has been proposed for automating network management, called policy management We will discuss how it can be applied to the management of a MANET in Section 62 We will also discuss how policy management can be used for providing security management in Section 63

A new approach has been proposed in the industry for managing large networks and overcoming the challenges discussed earlier This approach is called policy-based network management (PBNM) In PBNM, administrators do not have to worry about con guring the large number of parameters in each individual network element With PBNM, users (or network administrators) specify the high-level requirements of the expected network behavior rather than worrying about specifying each con guration parameter of each network element in detail The PBNM system is responsible for taking the high-level user requirements and con guring each individual network element automatically without any additional user input in a way that complies with the high-level user requirements, which are typically called policies PBNM allows users to specify high-level requirements that typically include:

Policies that de ne long-term requirements that need to be enforced throughout the network, such as whether certain types of traf c needs to receive a speci c level of QoS or be transmitted at a particular compression level, whether certain types of traf c needs to be encrypted, and so on Policies that de ne how the network should react when changes are required and speci c events occur in the network PBNM creates an automated feedback loop so that the network is recon gured without any human in the loop in response to changes in the network state The recon guration is based on policies that have been speci ed by the administrators beforehand For example, a policy may specify that, if a user is detected to be attacking the network, the attacker may be disconnected from the network so that the attack is stopped Another policy may specify that, if the loss rate in the network increases (eg due to changes in the terrain due to recent movements), a different transmission scheme may be used that may make network transmissions more tolerant of losses
