format data that was provided to the gsmSSF for the indicated leg in this call If, however, CAP FCI contains the append indicator, then the free format data carried in CAP FCI is appended to the free format data that was provided to the gsmSSF for the indicated leg in this call In the example in Figure 523, the gsmSCF provides free format data 1, which is appended with format data 2 by the next CAP FCI The following CAP FCI replaces data 1 + data 2 with data 3 Finally, the last CAP FCI appends data 3 with data 4 The free format data that is placed in the CDR at the end of this call leg is data 3 + data 4 One practical example is an on-line charging service that uses CAP FCI to indicate in the CDR the rate of the call, based on information received in CAP IDP Then, at answer, the CAMEL service receives in the answer noti cation an indication of the destination address, which may differ from the dialled number (see Section 5283 on deferred charging calculation) The CAMEL service may re-calculate the rate of the call and overwrite the free format data in the CDR with the re-calculated charge Then, at the end, CAMEL service uses the FCI-append mechanism to indicate in the CDR how much was charged for the call The total amount of free format data for one speci c call leg, including the appended data, should not exceed 160 octets The reason for this limitation is that the free format data needs to be placed in a transfer account procedure (TAP) le, along with other data from the CDR The TAP le may need to be sent to a charging system in another PLMN A too large free format data eld might complicate the handling of the TAP le 5282 Charging Continuity Monitoring The on-line charging mechanism uses the ACH and ACR operations During a call for which online charging is used, sequences of CAP ACH (instruction) and CAP ACR (response) are used When the gsmSSF sends CAP ACR, it allows the call to continue, but expects the next CAP ACH 4 explains that, for CAMEL phase 2, the call continues in the case that the next CAP ACH does not arrive for any reason To prevent a call continuing in the case of signalling failure, CAMEL phase 3 introduces an ACH-monitoring mechanism When the gsmSSF sends CAP ACR, it starts the Tccd timer; Tccd is stopped when the next ACH arrives If the next ACH does not arrive, then Tccd expires and results in the release of the call The maximum duration for Tccd is de ned per operator, but should not exceed 20 s Figure 524 gives a graphical representation of this feature The ACH-monitoring mechanism may be used during a through-connected call and during user interaction When Tccd expiry occurs, the call is always released; the default call handling parameter is not used in that case A further result is that there is no special indication in the CDR about the forced call release It might have been useful if the call release due to Tccd expiry was re ected
